OK so I know this has been discussed before many times but here goes anyway
I want to convert my 2011 specialized epic comp carbon 29er to a 1x11
My question is should I stick to sram components or go to shimano
I basically want to keep my xo truvativ carbon cranks if possible and get a narrow wide up front probably 32-34T
Was thinking going SRAM xx1 rear derailleur and cassette or shimano xtr not sure about front shifter yet

Any advice on gear would be much appreciated as this is all new to me

Don't forget to add the cost of a sram freehub if you are going with the sram cassette option- that is if you can get one for your current wheelset.
11 speed XT will be out in a few months you will be able to get a cassette, chainring, derailleur, shifter and chain for $400.

11 speed shimano MTB cassettes fit on a 9/10 speed hub

I'm being cynical and mildly troll like but $400 - is it really worth it just for one more gear?

(Said the man with a 2009 26er)

Probably not but I don't use the front derailleur at all on mine if I did it would just cause more issues than good ...plus it means I lose one mechanism that is always playing up and lose a bit of weight off the bike ...oh and I love shimano gear

What size bike you got and what type of chain and chainring did you go with

Same here, I'm just converting mine to a 1x9, I can't remember the last time I shifted the front rings. Even that cost $90. See what a skinflint I am Eye-wink

@ladytoast

I wouldn't do it just for the sake of it, I held off moving from 1x9 to 1x10 until last year. That extra gear is a doosey though, going from a 36t on the 10 speed to 40 or 42t on the 11 speed

My bike is over a yr old and 1 cassette is a few yrs old but not a lot of kms on it and I'm running 2 wheel sets .
