Manly Dam update for 26 Jan

By hawkeye - Posted on 26 January 2016

Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Red/Closed

Plenty of rain here the last few days on what was an already heavy trail. May not be officially closed but IMO you'd be wasting your time - trashing your bike and the trail.

UPDATE
Heavy rain and thunderstorms last night has left lots of standing water on an already saturated trail.

If you really must trash your bike I'd recommend Duck Holes and Centre Track loop or Perimeter and Long at Terrey Hills, and maybe Cascades at Terrey Hills if you really want to accelerate the damage with some steep climbs on a gritty drivetrain.

Fire roads only today, please respect the trail fairies and stay off the singletrack.

Do you have more information?

If you've ridden here lately please add a more recent report. This will be useful even if the condition is the same as updates expire after 30 days.
Please do not post comments with such information - post a new update with the link above.

So many non- riding days already this year... Think it's time to buy a roadbike for a backup.

Done that.

Get one with discs. Caliper brakes *suck* in the wet to the point of being dangerous :x

The good news is there's plenty of choice as disc roadies have been a big mover in the market and it will only get better as the UCI legalises them for racing in 2016/2017.

... to ride an mtb on the road, you know. Sure you get passed by lots of guys on roadies if you go out early in the morning, but you're getting much better training value out of riding a heavy bike with chunky tyres.... Smiling

I'm confused. You mean you can...

Hrrm. I dunno. I'm sure that breaks some kind of rule, somewhere.

Lach's picture

... it's all about the bike? That seemed the most applicable rule. If you want to join in the velominati, rather than just being a mtb rider moonlighting on the bitumen, that is.......

I pass. I need the excuse that I'm riding an inappropriate bike to account for for my very poor Strava performances on anything that resembles a hill. Smiling

Ride a MTB on the road, not much chance or riding a roadie on the trails

Had a quick look on way home. Puddles and bog in multiple places from bangaroo st through to golf course then first bit by bowling club is even worse and i would guess other spots arent any better
Not going to dry out for a while especially if predicted rain happens

Open on the council site, but I imagine it's wet

Going by the usual tell-tale, which is the low-lying nature strip up near the corner letter box in my street, the ground in this area is saturated which means the trail will still be wet and muddy with standing water in places.

There was big dump from the afternoon thunderstorm yesterday (Friday). Despite being a warm day today with the cicadas out in force, it's still feeling rather damp underfoot.

Sorry. I know it sucks. Sad

Went for a run around Nth Balgowlah, Seaforth bowlo and along the parkway. Defn very wet so I'd call it no go - for the trail's sake more than anything. I saw a fair few people riding the dam which got me a bit angry. Question is maybe it's me with the issues and the riders are fine - it is officially open so who is to say what's the done thing??

Let's be grateful - this country needs it.

MTB on road makes one ride harder as the legs would still remember the road on road speed and try & simulate it - some kind of training. =)

.. has just rolled through. My lawn is white from hail, some of which is the size of golf balls. Our insect screens are shredded, as are most of our trees, and I was seriously fearing smashed windows.

Bizarrely, the sky is now blue overhead.

I hope nobody was caught out in that on their bike.

Just wondering if anyone has checked the trails today? Dry enough? Thanks.

Improving slowly, but still saturated.

Update: raining again this morning (Thurs)
