Auckland to Rotorua by road?

A group of us are traveling to Rotorua and have found that there are no longer direct flights from Sydney to Rotorua,so we are flying into Auckland then driving ourselves in a 12 seater bus.
Can anyone advise of good trails or sights to see between AKL and ROT?
I'm guessing it's just best to go straight to Rotorua and get into the forest..
Any Rotorua, Mororangi trail or Lake Taupo tips also welcome..

Get the Trailmapps:Rotorua app (iphone or andriod). GPS enabled maps/guide Essential for finding your way around. plan the trails to ride prior.

Slight detour but very cool place.

Dig a hole in beach 2 hours either side of low tide and it fills with hot thermal water. Add buckets of sea water to get the temperature just right.

Note, don't be an Aussie beach snob and be put off by the colour of the sand. Its cool, some of its titanium. Grey rock plus volcanic titanium/iron mix makes grey to black sand.

If you want to nerd it up desposits of pure black sand (mainly on NZ west coast) can be picked up with a magnet forming strands of hair following the magnetic field lines. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironsand

Depending on what sort of riding you like, W2K Trail at Lake Taupo is worth a day trip to mix things up if you have the time. Park at Whangamata Bay and ride around the headland to Kinloch. Have lunch at Kinloch (There is a corner store/hamburger shop), then head back and have a swim in the lake at the other end. The Trail is not that technical but is a lot of fun and really flowy. Also has great views of the Lake.
