Manly Dam

The 1st half of the Manly Dam loop then crossing over the Parkway and riding to Forestville. After this we following the pipeline until we rejoin the Manly Dam loop. 100% legal, but there is a little road riding involved.

A touch under 15k's but will take 2 hours at night and you will need good lights.

This is a technical ride and at night it will be more difficult, so it's not for the inexperienced.

Bring a beer for post ride hydration.

Paul,

Hey lets organise a Friday night ride starting at a pub central to the Mob but we forget to take the bikes Eye-wink

We could do a Liam type poll and ask riders what pub is easiest to get home from?

Guys,

I have just signed up to NobMob (post a friend recommending your group at the weekend)

Would like to join you on Wed night as I have wanted to try night riding for some time now but not found anyone mad enough. If you are ok with taking someone new to night riding I would love to join you.

Adam, the last thing I want to do is dis-courage a new rider but please be warned that this is a very technical ride (tight twisting trails, steep rockly roll downs with wheel twisting ruts, handlebar grabbing trees, etc). In the daylight it is tricky, in the night (for me) the pucker factor is sky high. You will also need very good lights preferrably a handlebar and helmet set with 2 plus hours of burn time.

I would usually suggest a newbie first try night riding at Terrey Hills to get acquainted with the shadow/depth deception issues of night riding on a trail ride rather than on a technical ride (it's un-usual there is no night ride at Terrey Hills this week).

Now that you have duly been warned, only you know your skill level and if you still decide to come you are more than welcome.

It's true... riding a trail at night you might as well be on a new trail. Even the mundane Terrey Hills has it's share of fun - try launching off a water bar when the landing is in shadow and you're not 100% sure when you'll hit it.

First time I rode the dam at night as was blasting down the trail thinking to myself, "Why don't I always ride this line?", before hitting a few rocks and discovering why. Was 'fun' but at least managed to stayed in control. Erm... perhaps Lozza can share a similar story that didn't have such a happy ending! Eye-wink

he has one of his favourite rides as Manly Dam so is at least familiar with the track...
I trust others will replace Pikey as drinking partners?!!!

Hahah, yeah sure is a different trail at night. Scary stuff when you're only using 1 LED and can't see that far ahead.

At said location it had the smoothest entry before in the dip just turning to bedrock with little water carved channels out of it...

Didn't see it and basically after the 1 foot step just went sliding for about 4-5 metres on top of my bike.... My right pinky to this day still hurts and is always cracking Sticking out tongue

In the daytime, you can see a huge shadow of a step from afar and instinctively stick to the left hand side...

Night time is fun Smiling Just don't shoot ahead into the unknown if its an unfamiliar track! Shocked

Guys

Thanks for the feed back; I am keen to get to do a night ride, but only if I am not busting up your party

Assuming that you are doing Manly Dam + the track the other side of wakehurst parkway, (that is currently out of bounds for law abiding citizens at least) I know these reasonably well... though not at night !

I do have a big boys Li-ion HID lamp, so that shouldn't be an issue

It would also sound as though bringing some of my body armour would be a good idea too.

Assuming that you are planning to do it in 2 Hours I might even be able to keep up ! if not, I can ride it at my own pace and find my own way back.

Adam come on down and bring your drink of choice for post ride re-hydration - you'll probably ride the pants off us.

I'm tempted to bring some armour myself, just in case.

How much road riding will there be?

(I lost my taillight at ourimbah). Adam, you'll have a great time. Gloves and glasses are essential (to the point that I would MUCH rather have glasses than a helmet), shinpads are nice if you are using flats. A pressure suit is overkill Sticking out tongue

If you cannot keep up, then I will not be able to keep up either. If you have lights, you will be fine.

Nobmob is great in that the groups always wait. If you feel uncomfortable having a group wait for you, then I'm happy to do a slower ride with you on the same track. Once you meet everyone however, there is no way you will want to leave the group. Nobmobbers are awesome people!

PS they won't be riding the singletrack in the national park. The nobmobbers are hard at work trying to undo the extreme0hardcore-norules image of mountainbiking created by advertising agencies. It's great for getting chicks, but not so great for getting trails Smiling

Paul's picture

Not so much road riding as transitioning between trails.

Arpit hope you can make it

for how different the dam is at night, I managed to hit the deck last night before even getting onto the main track....not impressed! The rest the of the ride was pretty good though!
I have too many other committments to ever make a Wednesday night ride but I usually go for a quick lap on the way home on from work on a Tuesday night. If anyone ever fancies that just drop me a line.

Have a good ride!

Guys

Thanks for a great ride last night, I really had fun doing it and will definately be up for another crack at night riding. Next time I will not be wearing the mass of precautionary body armour and full face helmet as I was bloody boiling.

Thanks to Paul for organising and the rest of the crew who came out

Adam
