Decent towbar bike rack?

Submitted by LadyToast on Fri, 05/09/2008 - 20:52.

I'm on the hunt for a decent towbar bike rack, and to make it interesting I need to be able to get it for tomorrow morning for the drive down to Mogo. I'm thinking either my LBS or one of the car shops. Has anyone bought one from one of those places that can recommend it?

Cheers

I recommend the Thule EuroWay 945/947 (2 bike/3 bike) from their Artarmon shop.

You are welcome to borrow mine and test it out for this trip.

Fits any standard towball.

Pick up from Lindfield. Call me on mobile.

I just bought a 4 bike one

I just bought a 4 bike one from Phantom. Really good design, it has a bar that sits on the tow bar and the main bit clips over it so it's very easy to take on and off. Bike holders are good rubber with velcro straps. I think it was about $140 (I may have spent a bit on some other stuff too Smiling))))))))

Thanks guys, I don't know

Thanks guys, I don't know where Phantom is, I guess it's a car place? Think I will pick one up tomorrow, sounds just right.

Hunting the perfect rack is very difficult. I had to make one for myself as u can't buy a "refined rack" to fit on a standard tow bar.(Hitch tow bars racks are common) That Thule one Hans has talked about if good but quite large, but its the best you will find in its class.

My rack took many hrs to design and cost me under $600. Thule rack x2 $300, Tow Mount 130 (steel tubing and L plate) and lights/cables $110 and it was worth it!! Take a look...

Phantom == Mail Order

Dude... Phantom Cycles is an online mail order place.

There's a rack shop corner of Mona Vale Rd & Pacific Highway (North of the Junction) but I too can recommend Roof Rack World in Artarmon - top service there.

FWIW, I'd be going a rear mounted Thule model where the bike sits in a channel rather than hang on like mine. Something like the Euroway 945/947?

Although in that style, Bruce's Grip Sport rack is tops - give them a call too.

I have a q spear as well,

I have a q spear as well, great so far. You can get at BA or DY as far as I know. Have had 5 bikes on it, used it for shuttles and it will take any shape frame. AMB did a glowing review on it a few issues back as well.

Mate check out Anaconda stores in Auburn or Penrith
They stock the Q-spear 3 bike $130 and 4 bike $150 approx
I brought the 4 bike Q-spear and it's the best thing since sliced bread
takes all sizes and shapes of bike, can definitely recommend it

Q-Spear

Ended up going for the Q-Spear, brilliant and simple. I really like the way it slips over the ball socket and screws on. It's so solid too. Plus it looks like it should be really good for doing dips Smiling

Cheers to all that offered advice.
