Cascades on the 13th (Sunday)

Hey
I did a ride down the cascades a couple of weekends ago; I went down from Douglas street, up to Belrose via. Lower Camborne/Bare Creek, then up Quarry, then I crossed Mona Vale Rd, and went down a track that starts in the wild flower garden, it's incredibly steep (some places are steeper than the paved climbs up to Davidson), and is about double as long as Quarry (down and up), so I might do this again if anyone's up to it.

Meet at Douglas St entry, at 8:30am on Sunday 13th of Aug.

Sounds interesting... not that I've heard anything about this, but looking at the map:

Across Mona Vale road there are 2 options - one is marked the Ryland Track which is an out and back looking steep towards the (West) end. Cunningly there is a walking trail half way along here that heads North to Terrey Hills, Sandy Trail (have seen that from the North end so know that junction with Sandy is waaaay overgrown).

The other trail from MV Road is before Ryland (heading East from the tip anyhow) and wends around the back (North) of the other Oval (the one on Conway Ave) before what looks like quiet a steep drop and then a climb onto Kitchener St (which has to be used to get back onto the trail on what is marked the Ridge Top Track on our map.

Erm... yeah, so which one are you talking about? Eye-wink

Sorry, not sure I can make Sat, but would like to take a look at these next time.

Ah yes, that other track would have been the 'management track'... It should have taken you out at the end of a cul-de-sac off Warrimoo Road in St Ives Chase, or if you went left at the fork, the bottom of Kitchener St. If you hop out at Kitchener St, then ride up to Mona Vale Road, and go straight ahead at the lights, you'll soon come to another track which takes you to the abandoned recycling centre/tip. There's a bit of a downhill track which intersects the route to Warrimoo road.

If you hop out at Warrimoo road, you can find Warrimoo track, which is a firetrail which becomes a (steep) walking track. It's *technically* closed to bikes, because it has a 'walkers only' sign.
Alternatively you can ride south on Warrimoo Road till you get to the Caltex. You can head down the road to the right, down the steep hill (look on the map) and join Darri Track. It'll spit you off just near Burns road.

Ride up Burns Road, and turn right at Bobbin Head road. Look at a map for a few trails there too...

mitch_f1's picture

Wow, your good arpit.....but you missed the trials/DH track behind Warimoo Oval, and the Single Trail off of the initial trail i was talking about, it has a name, but i've forgotten it.

So, can we look foward to seeing you on this ride arpit?

Yes, it is the track labelled Management Trail.

Didn't know about this track...might have to try it one day.

Rob, is the sandy trail that you speak of, the one that starts on Mona Vale Road, near the Business Park, about 500m behind the golf course on that banked bend?
By the wy, the 13th is a Sunday...sorry, should have put that in the initial post.

Rob's picture

Nah, Sandy Trail is Terrey Hills/Duffys Forest area, see here Terrey Hills page, at the bottom.

Ah, 13th is a Sunday, eh? Well, in that case I'm keen Smiling

Hey Rob it sounds as though arpit may have almost stumble upon the missing link that will join Terry Hills shops up with the Marina at the end of Bobbin Head Rd, nearly all on trail.

Arpit, I've done the trail you speak of at the end of Warrimoo Rd. Just before the fire trail heads down hill there is another trail coming in on the right, any idea where this one heads to? It looks like it dead ends at the electricity tower last time I was there, is this right or does it somehow link back to the back of the wildflower garden?

mitch_f1's picture

No, that trail is a dead end.....I went down unter the tower to what looks like a single trail; it's not, or if it was it's too overgrown.....I think at one point that trail went to Terry Hills.

I've also ridden to Bobbin Head on that track, before steps were carved into the rocks on the river crossing, and let me tell u, it was very tough.

mitch_f1's picture

Here....i've drawn up a bit of a map:
http://www.cycloneinjapan.com/upload/files/81/1.jpg

At the bit circled in pale red there is a single trail starting at the wildflower garden....there is an intersection there (with 3 paths, of which i've been down 2), so maybe there is a single track from Terry Hills that links to this?

mitch_f1's picture

Sorry, i'm going to have to cancel.....something has come up.

I just came back from riding the track near the caltex....really nice track it is....and it goes to Bobbin Head, but it's not rideable all the way.

Rob's picture

Doh! Oh well, I'm still keen for a Cascades ride with a venture over Mona Vale road to Ryland and/or the Wildflower track.

Anyone else? Could we meet Wyatt Ave instead?

Rob's picture

Mitch, 'really nice track' sounds good. The Caltex is on the crn of Dalton Rd/Warrimoo Ave, right? So this track heads from the West end of Dalton Road down into the valley cut by Cowan Creek?

Down by the creek I see a trail that runs from part way down Warrimoo Track, south along Cowan Creek (and past this unmarked entrance from Dalton Raod) all the way to Bedford Ave (which is just off Burns Road). Is this the Darri Track?

Phew, so if the North end of the track by Cowan Creek ends up at Warrimoo Track, and the South end comes out Bedford Ave, how do you connect to Bobbin Head? Closest thing would be the walking track that goes up onto Bobbin Head Road (via Glengarry Ave) just South of the Golf Club... but this would involve a long (well, 2.5Ks) ride on the road.

Sorry, I know I'm missing something... doh! Eye-wink

Rob's picture

Confused, you will be Eye-wink

Just spoke to Stuart and a plan has emerged to check out the trail behind Warimoo Oval and round the Wildflower Garden.

We're meeting at 8am on Mona Vale Road where there's a break in the central reservation (about 500m from the tip to the West and maybe 1Km from the Forest Way junction to the East). After the above we'll loop back to the start and probably go take a look at Ryland Track too.

I don't expect any takers, so enjoy your day - for many of which will be running the City to Surf - good luck Smiling

mitch_f1's picture

Rob, to get to that track, you go down the road next to the caltex, which is Dalton/Warrimoo, then you hang a right down Waipori St, head down that, there is a little reserve on the corner down the bottom of the hill, go left down that road (Kapiti St), then down the bottom go right. You'll see a driveway that heads down very steep, at the bottom is a house, and the entry to the track on the left.

If you go right you'll eventually get to a fork; head right at the fork and that takes you to Bobbin head (I got told it joins up with the Warrimoo walking track, but I have no idea where, I have ridden down Warrimoo track many times, and cant find the link), it is a single trail, and isn't ridable (your off your bike more than on, plus bikes are probibited after a certain point- the sign says so). Head left at that fork and you'll go back to the same place that you would have gone had you gone left at the bottom of the driveway.

If you head left at the bottom of the driveway and go straight ahead at the bottom of the hill, you will eventually get to the Bedford Av exit, if you head right at the bottom of that hill there is a nasty climb up to somewhere in North Turramurra, but it is very fun going back down.

Sorry I couldn't join you, sounds like a good ride you have planned; have fun.

Rob's picture

Not quiet to plan, but a nice ride today all the same. Here's the profile:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/view....

We started off taking a single track that is not marked on any map I've seen. There was a sign there proclaiming it was Crown Land, no vehicular access so away we went. This joins up with the fire trail that is marked after 1.5Km or so.

Seems that walking track round the North of Wildflower Garden is called the Mueller Track. There are several entrances down to there from the sealed section around the garden, but all looked too steep to ride. Dunno what might be further down but we weren't game.

So we took the route marked, Management Trail down to Kuring-gai Creek (where the other end of Mueller can be passed and there is a, "no bikes" sign) and up the other side to Phillip Rd and then out and back on Warrimoo. Than back down to the Management Track, took a right and up to Kitchener St then up there, cross Mona Vale Rd and into Cascades on the entrance corner of Kitchener St/Roma Rd. From there it was back to the cars via the tip looking for an entrance to Mona Vale Rd that didn't materialise - although I hope when Stuart looks at this in Google Earth he'll see where I was trying to find Eye-wink

Stuart M's picture

No need to look at GE. Chucked the u turn on Mona Vale Rd and about 100m down the road there was another gate, locked, which looked like it had old Tip signage on it. Now just to find the other end!!

Mental note to self, before "exploring" with Rob again, carb load the night before, pack lots of Goo, and find another 10 gears. Christine I can highly recommend a couple of exploration rides with Rob to help prepare you for the Fling. Alls good, nice hard work out but can't say I would be rushing back to the "management" track or the track upto Kitchener St.

arpit's picture

Stu, If you want me to take you down the tracks there sometime let me know. I'm a local, and I know them very well.

Rob's picture

Ah, Stuart, really I'm not that energetic, you're making me blush :">

FWIW, that management track hill (up to Phillip Rd) really isn't that bad. Looking at the profile it's really no worse than Quarry Trail climb. Even if it's a tiny bit steeper that is negated by the fact it's sealed on the really steep stuff. I'd still call the climb up Elvina Track the toughest in these parts.
