These are better but the cost is a bit much for most people but saying that they are fantastic lights. I went with them so I would have no problems in solo 24hr events and having lights like these really is nice when you are totally buggered.

I run two Wilma's one on my head and one on the handlebars and have never not had enough light even blasting down the red lap at the Scott 24hr at 2.00am in the morning.

Ayups are great value and will suit most people.

The Steve's (01-04) have one of these:

Looked pretty impressive at the Scott.

Or you could just build something! Sticking out tongue

everyone has recommended these to me as well. I'd like to buy some and Liam, Rob and Bernd have said if we can get a bunch of us buying some as a group, we'll be able to get some sort of group discount.

You get a 5% discount for 5 or more people with Ayup's... but 5% is there maximum discount.
awesome lights. I went for my first night ride with them a week ago and loved it! and the candy colours are way cool too..

But my bike budget for new lights is blown until next year at least

When I casually mentioned to my wife recently that 'my bike needs a bit of attention'
She was aghast 'That $%&#ing bike gets more attention and money thrown at it than I ever do!'
She wasn't really serious (well, kind of not serious) but I got the point anyway

Is it possible to upgrade your ayups, and if so would someone be able to sell me a second hand set?

Buzz's picture

I had the same problem with my wife and my MX bike.

Just sit her done and explain "Honey I could give you the same attention and throw the same amount of money at you, but then I would expect to ride you whenever I want, where ever I want, for as long as I want, even let my mates have a go, then just leave you sitting in the garage till next time".

Did I mention she is my ex-wife

That's gold
I'll give it a go
I take it you can recommend a good divorce lawyer as well

Not to mention being used to the idea of 24hr team events Eye-wink

Upto about three weeks at the mo on my current build. Still a long way to go. Just not enough hours in the day for this very busy Mr Mom.

But Rob is right, if you want the brightest you can get at the cheapest price possible you build your own

If maximum light is your aim, Lupine Betty 14 - Bill at Virtuascape will sort you out. Top guy, great service.

If you are after an all in one unit (battery and light head in one casing) look into the Cygolite Trion 600 (upside = can get extra external battery pack for longer burn time, downside = no helmet mount) - see my reviews with beam shot

Otherwise try Beyondbikes (speak to Mike) or any of the lads at Chainreaction cycles (they have good pricing on the hope Vision4 with extra battery)

Hope this helps

I have made two sets of light and I now own a bought pair.

The benefit of making your own lights is that you know how to repair them when they break.

The benefit of buying a set of lights (Ay-ups) is that they don't break.

Andy,

Instead of taking Buzz's suggestion maybe you can get your wife to buy you a pair for Christmas.

Sell it that you will arrange everything, even pay for them and all she has to do is give it to you at Christmas.

My ayup copies, Cree R2 equipped, even use the same ayup mounting and carbon fibre interconnections.
Must post more pics..

Xmas present is already sorted
I let my wife listen to my rear hub while explaining how a new wheelset would actually save money in the long term
So she and her family are buying me a new wheelset for my birthday (December) and Xmas combined

Paul's picture

What hub and wheelset did you score?

Andy Bloot's picture

Must wait till Santa comes at Xmas with an order from CRC
I'm 95% sure that I'm going with the mavic 819's with pro 2 hubs and an upgrade on the spokes and nipples. Must wait for the correct coloured hubs as well. Very important you know.
Also coming are some LUST tyres. Think I will stick with the Ignitor and Larsen combo.
I will have to pay for these though.

The guy down at the shop has just finished showing me the new Commencal 55. Swine! I wish he'd kept it to himself. Crap spec, but beautiful frame. Would look even better with all the good gear from the Stumpy on it. And my ugly bonce sitting on it wouldn't look quite as ugly.
I daren't take one for a ride. In fact, I think I better keep away from the shop.

I really like the look of the L&M Seca to be honest:

Not as bright as DIY, also lots more 'spensive, but they do look rather nice all the same.
