Woy Woy Road, Brisbane Water National Park. Tunnel Track trail head. Driving from the East this is on the right just before traffic camera.

Tunnel Track and Woy Woy Road, NSW
Details:

As promised, here is a fun "out of towner" ride that all should love. Looking for new trails? Try this!!

Having heard about all the fun that was to be had the last time, it is about time that I got in on the action. This ride should be great.

I don't know yet whether the ferry is the way to go, as I have not investigated that option yet. But a mid morning start time is preferable as it may take some time to travel to the ride.

Who's in??

The ferry option sounds like a good idea. It will be great to commence and also end the day with a pleasureable ferry ride, nice and relaxing. Smiling

Although, we will be screwed if we have a bike failure. We won't be near the cars. Sad

unclebullbar's picture

I've been waiting for this one for ages, but cricket will be back on - Crap!
Just a thought about the ferry.... isn't the ride starting at the top of the hill, with the ferry due to dock at the bottom?
And another thought, why don't you start further up the hill at Staples Lookout? You'll sneak in about 5 or 6 extra fun fast downhill km's and only have an extra 5 minute ride on the bitumen back up the hill.
Or park even further up the hill, near the hieroglyphics entrance (tour guide Hans?) to make even more of a day of it - there are a few rocky platforms to play on the trail from here.
Have fun guys.

The ferry timetable has the ferry departing at 9am from Palm Beach and arriving at Patonga at 9:30am. As I haven't done this ride I'm not sure of how long it would be to ride to the top where the meeting place is.

Little-Ditty's picture

That 9:00 a.m. ferry is possibly not going to work that well. Mmmmmm. I can either change the ride start time by 30 minutes to 9:30, or make the meeting place at Patonga. If we make the meeting place down at Patonga, then we all ride downhill towards the jetty to finish our ride. That might be easier. What do you lot think?

anke13's picture

What time would we be back to Sydney? I'd love to do this ride, but might have to re-arrange my diary.

Alysum's picture

Liam I'm quite keen to catch the ferry myself to save a long drive along the F3/Woy Woy rd, plus like you said it would be pleasant. But I don't know enough about the ferry so I have emailed them to ask if bikes are OK (the ferries look quite small on the photos) and how many max it can carry. Will post their reply.
Must also find out how long the trip is to set a meeting time a Patonga if some choose to drive to there?

Tom

Little-Ditty's picture

I have no idea. Never ridden through there before. That is why we are having a social ride and explore. Most of the riders going have only been once before, or never. So there is no telling. BUT, as a guess, I reckon we would be finished riding at about 1-2pm and back on a ferry by 3pm maybe?? If you are time pressed, I would suggest driving all the way to Gosford so you don't wait for a ferry. The ferries only leave every hour.

Paul's picture

Andrew, this ride is for the 10th and the Cricket starts on the 3rd (3 more sleeps).

You can make this ride.

Very tempting - maybe if I limit myself to only 3 days at the cricket I can get a leave pass.

anke13's picture

I'll clear my diary for 10th and that way I can enjoy this ride without any time pressure.

anke13's picture

If anyone needs a lift from city/Eastern Sydney, PM me. I've got space for 1.

Brian's picture

I'm in. Make it 9:30am at Patonga assuming the ferry turns out ok. I can call them next week if they don't respond to Tom's email.
Cheers
Brian

unclebullbar's picture

Sorry Paul, I'm not that much of a cricket tragic. I actually have to play cricket on this day - and every other Saturday this summer. My window of opportunity for Saturday rides has closed.

As unclebullbar mentioned, the ride up from the ferry to the starting point is a bit of a slog (first up)... and taking into account the general NoBMoB affliction towards the black stuff, just be aware if what you are getting yourselves into.

There is a trail behind the tip area (in Woy Woy) that would get onto the trails quicker and save you from 'scumming' but I would allow more time for 'exploring/ferries/relocating bearings' etc.

[edit] I now see that ppl who have ridden this area before will be there, so hopefully you will be able to come up with a good route...
Cool

Alysum's picture

Steve from the ferries replied to me and said it's OK to have bikes up to about 20 and that there is an additional fee of $2 per bike.

Tom

Brian's picture

Couldn't we take this route from the ferry although as I have't been there I am not sure if you can ride this.

http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&...

Mick377's picture

You certainly can take that route, I did something similiar in Oct when I rode from Staples lookout and followed GNW to Patonga (walking frequently), and came back to Staples the way you have described.

Its mostly ok, but pretty slow going when the GNW goes past the tip for a few km and you will have to carry your bike in a few places.

Starting at sea level you will have a bit of climbing, so it makes things a bit hard if some are starting at the speed camera and others at Patonga at similiar times. I guess if you meet in the middle, one group will get their climb at the start of the day, and the other at the end of the day. Perhaps meet in the middle (eg Mt Wondabyne, great view from the top).

Would like to join, but doing Bogong to Hotham.

Cheers

Hello fellow riders,

I'll be coming from Concord and will go via Metroad 3 (Lane Cove Rd), Pacific Highway, F3.
I can accommodate one more person incl bike in case anybody needs a lift. Pick up preferrably along the route described above.

Alternatively, if somebody wants to drive and has a spot available for my bike and me, I won't complain either...
Can drive to a pick up location of course.

Looking forward to the ride.

Cheers
Sascha

Hi all,

For those getting the 9:00 ferry from Palm Beach to Patonga, the ride starting time has been changed to 10:00 a.m. so you have time to meet up.

Also note, the ride MUST be finished in time so riders get back down for the last ferry that leaves at 4:15 p.m.

I am now unsure what I will be doing, driving or ferry. As a guess, probably driving. If I don't get the ferry, I will need to be able to contact someone by phone that is riding North to meet up with the group.

Alysum's picture

I'm not sure that the Ferry is a reliable option as the ride and hike up to the meeting point looks long and slow so I think it's safer to just drive to there.

Tom

anke13's picture

I'm definitely driving to the meeting point in Woy Woy.

kurt's picture

the ferry to patonga is quite small
Pray for no rough weather
i went on the big one from ettalong to palm beach today and it was rough
not sure how a queasy ride after the ferry would be

and has any one noted that patonga is a long way from your meet point
at the top of woy woy road

good luck guys and i wish i was going
but alas hidden trails in the area call

Kurt

Brian's picture

I am going to call the Ferry mob tomorrow to find out how much and also if I can make reservations. I wouldn't want to rock up and find it was already full Sad.
Once I have this info I will post it and we can do a tally of who's driving etc.

GAZZA's picture

mind you, it is the silly season so a phone call wouldn't go a miss.

Brian's picture

I spoke with Steve from "Palm Beach and Hawkesbury River Cruises Pty" and he said it is first in best dressed. The 9am is usually empty but he does recommend to get there by 8:30am and it is $15 return. So who is definitely going to get the ferry across as I will drive if I'm the only one. It would be good to have someone going by the ferry who also knows the way from Patonga to the meeting point Smiling. Also, if you are not familiar with Palm Beach Wharf, there isn't much parking so I would recommend parking in the vicinity and riding there.

I'm not worried with the Ferry, I'm more concerned with how long the ride and hike up the trail will take - perhaps someone could contact the Patonga tourist office/townhall if there is one Eye-wink for more information and whether it's actually legal to ride up there.

Tom

Brian's picture

Ok, I found the profile from when Rob did the ride and it does seem like it took a while to get from Patonga to the meeting point. Given this I could see the Ferry group hardly riding with the group driving. Maybe its best just to drive Sad and save the ferry option for another day Smiling.

bluray's picture

have been looking at my topo maps for this ride & have found a track that might be worth a look.If you go into robs motion based activity from the last ride then into dashboard you can see a track off to the left of their last ride, this track on my map is shown as a walking track & goes all the way down to the Hawkesbury river. Not sure if it is rideable or not but could be worth an explore.

Gary's picture

If it ends up that no one decides on the ferry option it would probably be wise to start this ride a little earlier
as I think it is going to be another warm one and a lot of this ride is quite exposed.

Brian's picture

I will be driving and no one has come forward and said they will be getting the ferry so if need be I can make the original start time of 9:30am. It will be only 25 degrees on Saturday so it should be ok temp wise.

craigs's picture

and happy for an earlier than 10 start if it comes about.

Craig

Gilbo's picture

to the meeting point. will keep an eye out for any changes to the start time.

cheers

Alysum's picture

I will be driving too. Perhaps during the ride or at the end if some want to ride more, we could ride down the trail until the start of the walking single track to see what it's like for next time we do a ride in the area and take the ferry? Smiling

Tom

Gary's picture

Have to pull out of this one, have a great ride.

craigs's picture

still 10:00am or if no ferries are we starting 9:30am?
thanks

Little-Ditty's picture

Note to all riders, as we do not seem to have anyone still keen to get the ferry, the time is moved to 9:00 a.m. It will make a better use of the day too.

I did a Google Map search for travel time from Cremorne - the car trip is 1 hr 22 min.

craigs's picture

for the time update ..... rockin!!! should be a great day!

I feel certain we will know where to go and not get lost (as some have been there before), but does anyone have a topo map of the Bris Waters NP area? It may be handy to have.

BTW, there will be scope to do a bit of exploring rather than simply try and ride the same places that the previous Bris Waters expedition did last year. Especially if we head west from our point of origin. Looks like a tops place to explore. Laughing out loud

Cheers, amd see you tomorrow! Smiling

bluray's picture

actually need 2 maps for the whole national park, just so happens i have both, will bring them both with me,looking forward to it should be a good ride see you all there.

Sascha's picture

I have two boxes of Powerbars (about 20+ bars) that I would like to donate tomorrow.
They are left overs from a major training program last year. 'Best before' date is 31 Jan 2009.
Since I can't eat them all until then... flavors are Vanilla, Cookies & Cream, possibly some Chocolate.

So if you still don't know what to bring to eat... here's an alternative.

Cheers
Sascha

Sorry, you didn't get my sms. I sent it at 2:29am this morning - I was still up and figured that it wouldn't be fair to come on a ride sleep deprived and slow everyone down. I hope you had a great ride. Very sorry to miss it! Sad

bluray's picture

good ride today, great bunch of people, enjoyed it even if we couldn't find much of the elusive single track thanks for organising liam.

Brian's picture

Great ride today. Below is the profile so you can see if we went to where we intended Eye-wink

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/7421419

bluray's picture

we could have still gone further on that single track we were on, how i don't know,

GAZZA's picture

you caught the ferry in the end bri? was it worth it or more a pain in the ass?

Brian's picture

No GAZZA I didn't get the ferry. We didn't even go down Patanga way. The track we went down was leading to another bay and didn't link to Patonga. One day I will go across on the ferry for a ride even if it is a scumming one Eye-wink

Now that could be a loop. Ride from Bayview, through McCarrs Creek, St Ives to Hornsby, up the old Pacific Highway to the Gosford turn off, down to Patonga or Ettalong, get the ferry and then ride from Palm Beach to Bayview. I think I may need to google a course and check the kilometers Smiling

Brian's picture

Bluray, that would have been where we stopped at the creek and Liam checked the track where the track went and it looked more like a walking track.

GAZZA's picture

ive seen and heard a lot of roadies do. i saw turamurra on the ferry one morning when i'd been to a friends house on the central coast. sean, steve, bruce and i have talked about it for a while. maybe time to post a ride??? some say about 170km others say its only about 130km. maybe worth a plot on google maps when i've time.
id be keen to do this ride in the next month or so. bri, make sure you put plenty of chamoix creme on for this one eh? Eye-wink
also bri, we could set off from ours nice and early and meet junkie on the way to pick the others up at hornsby then after the ferry back to palm beach, we could stop off at mine for refreshments before the others rode back to hornsby.

Andy Bloot's picture

Pikey, Craig, Tien and a few others found some more single track near where we stopped for food
But everyone else went back the same way and we waited to see if they returned
When they didn't we went back the same way and never checked it out

I think Tien went to have a look and it looked viable
I'm wondering if that's is the continuation
Of course, my sense of direction is useless and we could be talking about another spot entirely

Buck's picture

Thanks for organising Liam. It was a decent little ride. That technical single track was fun. Best of all I managed to stay on my bike all day Smiling

Little-Ditty's picture

Cool ride today guys. Cool Glad you enjoyed it. As discussed above, that utopia single track was truly elusive. But never mind, was still a fun ride at a new location, at least for me. Eye-wink
