Vibration from braking?
On my last two rides, my rear brakes have been howling and sending severe vibration up through the frame of my bike. Does anyone know of what could be causing this and/or how to deal with it?
I have the rotor centred fairly well and tightened the cone nuts with no success.
Appreciate any feedback....
FYI: Trek Fuel ex7 with Avid Elixir CR brakes (7 inch rotors)

You may want to check whether the rotor is bent - quite common to happen

This has happened to me - it's a horrible feeling.
You may have picked up some chain lube splatter on your rotor. Give it a good wipe with a clean cloth and some brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Give your chain a good bath too. You can never have too clean a chain.
Also check your pads too. If oil/lube gets onto them they'll just soak it up like a sponge an your problem will persist.
It's cause its an Avid.
Avids are notorious at squealing or creating a "turkey gobble" noise. I've had Juicy 7, Avid Elixirs and they are sick for creating noise.
If everything is aligned, give the rotors and pads a clean. This fix's the problem for me.
For the record mine are Avids too (Juicy 3s)
Your pads may simply be dirty.
1. Go to your wardrobe, put on an old shirt.
2. Remove pads.
3. Rinse in plain cold tap water.
4. Wipe on your shirt until dry. Wipe the rotor too. Both sides.
5. Blow out the caliper to remove grit etc. If it's really dirty in there, use a toothbrush. Plain water only.
6. Install pads. Go for a spin.
It'll take just a few minutes to decide if this has worked. Let me know.
This morning I cleaned my rotors and pads (the Elixirs are much less fiddly than the Juicys) with Alcohol wipes and went for a spin at Manly this arvo....... SUCCESS! The brakes were awesome again! A little too awesome actually as I OTBed on the last downhill section.
