Dirtworks 100km. Bridge crossing... Walk or RIDE?

Critty's picture

By Critty - Posted on 26 April 2009

I think it's time to face another fear and this weekend at the DW (100) I'm going to ride the bridge/jump and was wondering if anyone had any riding techniques for narrow planks across a river? (any updated plans steve01? Eye-wink
And how far is it from the finish?
Anyone thinking about giving it a go this year?

Rob's picture

Think the bridge is at about 65Km mark or so. Mind over matter... think how easy it is to ride down the white line in the centre of the road.

That said - you will be tired (unless you've been saving yourself which isn't a bad idea) and the current in the river makes it interesting.

Good luck! Smiling

leximack's picture

i have always walked it because pretty much everyone else does so you have to wait for a clear gap to ride it, plus i am a wimp and dont want to get wet Eye-wink

Don

LadyToast's picture

I've been thinking the same thing too.... My choice will be made at the time. If there are people in front of me walking then I will walk, if it's a free run then I think I will give it a go. Once you set off it can't be that hard, even if you are tired, just keep your eyes looking well in front and don't look at the water (you go where your eyes look etc.). For me time is more important than the photo, I guess we could always ride back after the race to do it if you miss it the first time Smiling Or even on the Saturday?

Last year I think the run up was very sandy as well??

pikey's picture

Before I comment further I need to know how deep does it get?

I have heard only 1m max? Is it tidal and if so what is the % of sea salt at that point in the river?

Are the two planks 250mm wide each giving a total of 500mm wide? That sounds easy then.

I know the planks are aprox 2.5-3m long and are staggered so what is the deflection between the off planks? More than 25mm ?

Help appreciated

Rob's picture

Check it out:

Pontoon Crossing

One issue is that the 2 planks that make the combined width move up and down separately so there's a nasty ridge along the centre of the bridge.

pikey's picture

....to get 25 canoes and 60 planks to practice on.

Anybody want to have a go (for a small fee?)

Pikey

(looks easy) Smiling

Paul's picture

Just the reputation is putting me off, especially the independently moving planks and the ridge stopping lateral movement from one plank to the other.

Is there anybody out there that has ridden the bridge and what tips have you got?

Warthog's picture

Did it last year and just made it over. The guy before also tried and got wet - water is only 1m deep so if youre not afraid of cooling down a bit I would give it a go.

Damien's picture

I have ridden once and walked it once.

If there is no one in front or they are almost over the other side I will be riding it as it is easier than walking. Just remember not to look down try and carry a bit of speed and you will be fine if I can do it most of you guys should make it across no problems.

PIVOT MACH 5's picture

And im thinking of giving the ride across my best effort. My mate does it. How hard can it be?( famous last words:-))

Alysum's picture

If this was something like less than 15kms before the finish then I think lots more would do it Smiling It would look very embarassing to fall sideways and land on the canoe then into the water Sad

Tom

christine's picture

i totally agree with you - and my plan, presuming i am still out riding will be to walk across and pray not to fall of sideways, land on a canoe and into the water! I think a lot of my riding time will be spent worrying about that bloody bridge thing... Smiling

Bernd's picture

take ur Ipod and put "bridge over troubled water" on, and u'll be right!!!!!
Bernd

Buck's picture

I'd fall asleep on a ride if that song was on! Then again it would drown out Pikey telling you to walk everywhere Sticking out tongue

Alysum's picture

Under the bridge? Smoke on the water? Laughing out loud

500 miles , when the river runs dry , and pretty much anything from The little River Band , Bow river ..........Sorry

River of Dreams - Billy Joel
I'm on the drug that killed River Phoenix - TISM
Going Under - Evanescence

Sorry, but I'm packing darkies about it too - def walking.

BTW - do we have any NobMob Team strategies for the race? It will be my first 100km ride and I'm out to "Complete not Compete". Is anyone forming groups to stick together and keep each other company?

BWOAR!

christine's picture

100 too - am planning a social ride with stuart! to complete is to win i say!

unclebullbar's picture

Can I share your iPod too? I'm afraid that listening to my iPod will affect me negatively with a current playlist that includes:
Loser - Beck
Blame it on the Rain - Milli Vanilli
Another one bites the dust - Queen

BWOAR!

Bikeboy's picture

On your play list you probably need more help than an ipod can provide !!

Supagav's picture

Christine you are going to attempt to ride the bridge to are you not? Well I will have a few beers waiting for you at the start of the bridge crossing..... (I had make this public!)

christine's picture

the ipod if you are up for
wake me up before you go go
dancing queen
...and especially for the bridge... under pressure
not to forget stuarts favourite when riding long distance with me - shuddup a your face

Gav - if you wait there with a beer i WILL ride the bridge - actually, two beers, i will need courage!
ps you are very very evil you know.. Smiling

Steve 01's picture

The bridge crossing is HARD it moves side to side & up and down, when riding the first time I did it I went slowly and was continually having to correct my steering to offset the movement of the bridge this was the hardest part of the 100k ride IMO.Last year I decided to go flat out across it which worked a treat till about four metres from the end when I rode off the bridge at full pace went fully under and the water was cold but not deep probably waist height. It was very refreshing cleaned all the mud off my bike & me if it was a warm day I'd recommend it.This year I'm going to try medium pace I hope I make it

Damien's picture

Have you ridden that far with Stewart before you guys might be ready to push each other in by the time you get to the bridge. Smiling

Paul's picture

I was all set to ride the bridge, (mono the first half then manual the rest) but I will have my ipod and GPS, so I'll be walking to keep them out of the drink.

dangersean's picture

Carrying iphone, GPS and not wanting to completely submerge my beloved bike then ride a further 35km's means I will walk the bridge... but saying that, some of you know how much I like a clean bike.....

Bernd's picture

are all girls! I wish there was a bridge like that on the 50km DW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bernd

Damien's picture

Says the 50km rider.

Bernd's picture

I may wear something pink!!
Bernd

christine's picture

thing and i believe HE is doing the 100 - you are a princess doing the 50 so ought to sport a tiara!

Stuart says...

“TTFU”
Bikes don’t float, just ride the river bottom across

Damien's picture

Noticed this in the event programe.

Every rider that rides the bridge without stopping will receive an exclusive silicon wrist band boasting that they rode the bridge! Riders will be awarded with their flashy armband at the end of the crossing.

so who rode the bridge and scored a wrist band?
I rode across but when i got to the other side they had ran out of wrist bands Sad (i guess there were 100 successful cross's before me) They took my number down so maybe might see one in the mail at some point. Hope the dude got a good photo so i can prove i did it in the meantime Smiling.

Don

Carlgroover's picture

The wrist band was the decider for me, I walked last year and wanted to ride this time but was unsure if I'd make it. Once I heard about the band I decided to give it a shot and it paid off Smiling

Critty's picture

I was so excited to make it across that I didn't even notice if there was a photog getting shots....
Well done on the crossing, the hardest part was pushing through the sand grabbing the wrist band and getting
it on my wrist. I've still got mine on as a consolation for not beating last years time Smiling

Damien's picture

Was never a question rode it two years ago and made it I walked last year and it was harder than riding so no question about it will always ride it now. Just got to get there before the que starts to build up it was very frustrating standing around not going antwhere.

If theres a prize for falling in will even do that.

LadyToast's picture

When Critty and myself got there there wasn't a rider around, I just rode right on. Everything was fine till the bridge started wobbling and I knew Critty had started behind me. Almost a comedy moment as I looked round to see him wobbling as much as I was. I wasn't going anywhere till I got my band after that.

PIVOT MACH 5's picture

so i walked with the group and instantly regretted it as the whole thing was bouncing and shaking from all the feet! nearly fell in just walking. and then i wouldnt looked really silly. next year... ride it for sure.

Alysum's picture

what is this wrist band? what does it look like?

Tom

LadyToast's picture

It has the illusion of being made of black rubber but in fact it's made of unobtainium and makes you irresistible to women and turns you into a cycling god.

Didn't you get one then? Laughing out loud

OzMoT's picture

it was all very funny until i had to actually walk across across (well 5000 2cm steps anyway)nearly fell in with a few ooh's and aahs and OOOOOOhhhs from the bank...blerry funny, felt like that episode of mythbusters....

OzMoT

v's picture

won the magic "I rode the bridge" rubber thingy, Do you think she is going to be irresistible to men too and turns into a cycling goddess too?? As I did not ride the bridge so....BOooooOOOOOoooooOOOOOooooo next year then ... Smiling

Beany's picture

In essence you wrist band is made of pure Nitrazepam, which according to Wikipedia is a "a hypnotic drug with sedative and motor impairing properties".

If a women notices the band and asks you about it that will be the catalyst for an immediate chemical reaction that makes their eye glaze over, their breathing become shallow, triggering an irresistable urge to glance at their watch and attempt to ring their own phone by mental telepathy.

However, I think you are a cycling God and I'm sure your story will truely inspire me to go harder longer.

May your wheels be true and your stroke smooth

I want the I fell in the water 2010 one my plan is to ride to the last gap where there is water stop and fall over cant wait.

Is that Sean in one of the photos crossing the bridge.

dangersean's picture

indeed Gary it was me... After waiting so long to *cough* walk the bridge, I went across with about 5 in front of me. I couldn't believe how much the bridge was wobbling. I know now! the were clearly LOADS more walking behind me!
