Sunday 15th October - Intro ride

Justin's picture

By Justin - Posted on 05 October 2006

So I've been asked to take a bunch of novice MTBers out for a ride and I recommended Terry Hills.

So the plan is meet at Terry Hills shops at 08:30 Sunday 15th October.

This is open to all - be good to see you there.

All the usual -
- Helmet (no helmet=no ride)
- 2 litres water
- muesli bar / energy snack
- sunscreen
- spare tube
- pump (I'll have one so not mandatory)

This is mostly smooth-ish firetrail so if you haven't done a lot of MTBing then this a good intro.

We'll do about 22 Km in two to two and a half hours.

any questions, reply to this, drop me a message through this site or call me on 0419 611 681

See you there!

Haven't done the Terry Hills Ride before so I am throwing my hat in the ring!
See ya there ; )

would anyone be interested in doing this ride and then plus some? I would ideally like to add on the duck ponds but since I have no idea where they are if no one wants to go there then I will go down the Neverfail and Sandy Track and then back along past Skippy and the perimeter again - Rob, will this help my 'training' or do i have to even further? I just don't want to do laps...

Reckon you'd be better doing this as an add on:

Turn right after the return from Long Trail and go down Cullamine and then out to Duffys Track. Very nice, just a few more Km and a good climb back up to Perimeter and the way home.

Pratiwi & I will be there Sunday - talk her into it and we'll join you Eye-wink

Later on, for more distance you can stretch this out to Booralie and more and eventually form a huge loop back along Sandy Trail to the start.

Justin's picture

Hey Rob good suggestion - but those few extra Kms will seem a lot longer to some of the folks that haven't done a lot of MTBing. So maybe we'll see how everyone is doing and make our minds up when we get back from the long trail

I was hoping to hit up the Blue Mtns this weekend as I am away for the next few weeks. I guess they are not going anywhere.

Long route at Terry Hills sounds good to me it'd be good to meet some more of you on the ride also.

See you there.

Sam

I'll be there also.

The add on sounds good- depends on hangover or lack thereof.

See you then.

I have not ridden on any of the trails at Terry Hills, so will give it a shot.

Cheers

christine's picture

Hello!
don't know if it helps anyone else, but I find if i eat pasta the night before I go riding I have much more energy...and am less tired at the end
Greg, I am keen to add on at the end so that would be great!
See you there!

Geoffo's picture

Where exactly (st names pls) are the Terry Hills shops?

Stuart M's picture

Geoffo,
Heading east on Mona Vale Rd, turn right at the lights onto McCarrs Creek Rd. At the round about turn left. After about 70m this road sweeps to the right, north, and this is Booralie Rd. In the first block, on the right hand side is some shops.Immediately past the shops there is a street on the right with a park on the corner, sorry mate Whereis doesn't have a street name for this one. Turn into this street and park anywhere here or in the carpark behind the park.

If you are a newbie and liked the sound of this ride before it started to grow in length then don't be put off. I will be riding and don't intend to do the extra distance so will be happy to ride back with anyone that feels the same way.

Greg, I'll bring the Kona for you, no pedals though so if you want to ride it you will need to bring some.

Stuart

pikey's picture

I don't know if this hinders anyone else, but I find that if I drink four beers + three glasses of red then two rums the night before, I ride realy crap the next day. But hey the night before was good. (sorry Christine) Eye-wink

Greg

Stuart M's picture

Greg,
Its not the grog that gets me but the pizza I always seem to find in my hand on the long walk home from the pub that stuffs my performance.

So just to put down some co-ordination, guidelines and reminders to try to keep a large group ride working for all... the stuff below is all basic stuff that we've learnt by hard experience (people do get lost, people do break things and themselves, people are impatient)

1. We will be meeting at the Terry Hills shops for a departure of 08:30 - please plan your arrival time to give yourself the necessary prep time once you arrive. It looks like 12 to 15 people will be throwing rotten eggs and tomatoes at the last to arrive...

2. On the ride, we will have a varying mix of abilities and stamina. As guide, I plan to stop every couple of kilometres and wait for everyone to catch up - and give the last that do a minute to catch their breath if needed. So as you can imagine, this will be quite an easy pace for some. If it's too easy and you want to race off never to be seen again, that's your call.

3. If you decide not to bother to catch up and turn around - that's your call - but call me to let me know because we will come back looking for you after 15 minutes or so of 'where the bloody hell is....' Smiling

3a. Basic communication before / during /after the ride - Make sure someone else on the ride has your mobile number - and take your mobile with you. Program mine. Give mine to your significant other.

4. The planned ride is perimeter trail, long trail (out and back to the perimeter trail) back along the perimeter trail to a short road section back to the cars. The natural split point if you want to do the longer ride is when we get back from the long trail. I'll be heading back to the cars (mmmm coffee....) at this point, but those that are game - again it's your call if you want to do some more K's Smiling

5. And as we have some new folks turning up - remember this is a social ride - this is not a 'club' - you are individually responsible for turning up prepared and riding within your limits. Please be sure you read and re-read the disclaimer - http://nobmob.com/disclaimer

I am really looking forward to seeing you there and out on the trail!

Cheers,
Justin

Well, I am home now and Jake The Rake (my dog) is asleep on valium after his dramatic epelepitc fit...the worst yet...he had a crowd tend to him in my absence! (thank god it wasn't a tick)
Thank you whoever took Kristina home - (Rob & Pratiwi?) I was back at the car in 15mins (my super record time!).

I've uploaded all the pics from today to http://picasaweb.google.com/JustinPhotoGallery/2...

I'll work on some and post some of these on NoBMoB.

Oh and I did not catch everyone's name - so please add a comment under your photo saying who you are!

Great to see lots of new faces today. Here's the profile:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/view....

Well, for some of us. The majority will have done around 22Km, Tien probably did it hardest of all - sorry, mate! Eye-wink

Geoffo's picture

Great ride guys - thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I gotta get fit!!
Thanks to all who were involved. Rob - any way of converting your little machine that gives u all those details to KM's (not miles) and degree's c from farenheit? Amazing data that can be collected. Thanks for posting the photos too Justin!! Christine - glad doggy is ok.

Rob's picture

To get the data from the 'little machine' in Km instead of miles (in MotionBased I assume)... there's a small button top right when you aren't logged in, think it says, 'Show in Metric' or something.

If you're an MB user it's in your prefs of course.

Hi All

Thanks for the great ride today. Despite my little mishap on the downhill bit I still had great fun. I think I'm getting better ever so slowly!

Hope to see you all next time.

Hey Justin, just wanted to give you some qudos for organising and taking out a large group of new nobmobbers.
I am sure they were all very appreciative to have been shown around by such an experienced leader. Great too that there were some regulars along for the ride.
I wish I could have made it along.

Nice work!!

Another thankyou for a good days ride and all the pre/post effort, much appreciated. Don't think I'll be able to make the Oaks next weekend but would be interested in Joining with Fling training rides, keep those posts coming!

Ta,
Matt.

Had it not for the sign on the fence saying "Electrified fence" - i would have kept going along the fence to the right

It was a bugger to climb back to Perimeter track!

Nice to see so many riders!

OMG - if you turn right there you fall right off a cliff Eye-wink

You can turn left though and get up to the road and more trails, etc. We should do it one day. Sorry again for loosing you! Sad

Liam Turner's picture

Thanks again to the organisers, and all who showed up- good fun.
Hope to make it next Sunday for the Oaks.

See you then.
