The Oaks October 22nd and November 5th, Day and Night options

Stuart M's picture

By Stuart M - Posted on 08 October 2006

Friday nights ride revealed that several of the "newer" more regular riders have not yet done the Oaks in the Blue Mountains. Discussion also turned to how great it would be as a night ride.

So here's my proposal.

Sunday November 5th is a full moon and gives us the next chance of doing this trail at night on a weekend, probably the best time for most of us. Meeting time at Glenbrook station to be advised, probably dependent on train times. Also a nice warm up for those considering the Fling the following weekend.

Just so we are all familiar with the trail, I also suggest a day run Sunday October 22nd. Time again to be advised depending on trains but will be an am start at Glenbrook, probably around 8ish.

Sorry to the fitness fanatics but I mean a traditional run, train (or car depending on state rail) from Glenbrook to Woodford, ride back on the fire trail and single track to the causeway and then the road climb back to the cars.

Post back if you are interested in one or both of these rides.

No offence people, but if you are training for the Fling you really should be doing the Oaks both ways (which is about 52Km), starting at the bottom is the best choice IMHO.

If this sounds too much to begin, at least do a good proportion of it on the way up (perhaps to what is marked as 'Trail View' on our KMZ - that's a few Km past the clearing top of the full on blast downhill section) with the intention of turning round when you feel you can't go on (remember, it's all downhill aside from the last climb from the creek back to Glenbrook).

I'm more than happy to come with but don't fancy this at night without a decent head light to compliment the bar mounts I have.

BTW - talking of Fling training, what happened to Penrose/Wingello state forests trip? Keen to do Wingello again too.

I'll go for the 52 Km day ride that Rob is talking about

Doesn't take long for the fitness fanatics I refer to to highjack a pleasant ride does it? Smiling

Guys please read the original post, this is not meant as a full on hit out for the fitness freaks, but an intiation to the Oaks for those that haven't done it, a refresher for those that have followed by a night ride a little later for those that want too. By all means do it both ways if you wish, but start a seperate post please.

Anyway, for those not so sure, have a look at this post http://members.iinet.net.au/~fathers/oaknight.htm, thanks to The Fat Hippy, and or talk to someone that rode the other night ...... without their lights on.

Fair point Stuart, was just saying is all Eye-wink

I can't make 22nd anyhow. In fact, won't be doing much weekends 21/22 and 28/29 at all so will not be about to subvert this one.

If you wanted to do a pleasant ride with a little training, another option might be to drive to the picnic area (near Nepean Lookout turnoff) and ride up and down from there - then you can erm... picnic after?

well, I don't think i could ever be accused of being a fitness fanatic!
would this ride be ok for the half a flingers? i am keen even if not as a 'newer regular' rider!!!
however! as the resident moon woman...it won't be nearly as bright by then - wishy washy even...

Gday

I was hoping i might be able to join
you for the day ride on the 22nd ?

Thanks for your help.

Stuart M's picture

Mate as long as you have a bike and all the usual essentials then all are welcome.

Stuart M's picture

OK heres the details.

Meet Glenbrook Station for an 8.20 train, so this means ideally by 8.10 at the latest, ticket in hand. DON'T BE LATE! There isn't another train for about an hour and Rob'll make us ride up to Woodford if we miss it:-)

Address, corner of Burfitt Pde and Raymond St. There is a carpark between Ross Street and Euroka Rd on Burfitt Pde.

Bring plenty of water, food, sunscreen and all the usual bike essentials. You'll need money for a train ticket for yourself and your ride. $4 each or $8 in total, bring coins, the station is often unattended.

Post back if you are coming so we know who not to wait for;-)

Check again Saturday arvo, I will check with city rail for any late trackworks and post any changes to the above.

No, we don't want to leave it till the 9.22 train as large parts of this trail are exposed and can get damn hot later in the day.

Cheers all, hope to see you there.

Sorry guys,

will have to pull the pin- I had a catastrophic derailler explosion at Manly Dam this morning. I'm awaiting a new hanger from Kona, which won't arrive till next week.

I'm heading OS on Monday, so will hopefully catch you in a few weeks.

Have a good ride,

Liam

Gday

Just wondering if tommoro Will we be
riding no matter the weather ?

Cheers

Stuart M's picture

At the moment Jordan that would be a yes.

Weather here and there is often completely different, often wet on the coast and dry as a bone by the time you hit the mountains.

That said, have a shocking head cold today, will call all if it is as bad in the morning and I pull the pin.

I'm going. With regard to rain - if it is only a slight drizzle or has previously rained, this ride should be on. Only if it is puring down will this be a nightmare. We've worn out complete sets of pads at the oaks in the rain.

Oaks is notorious - bring two.

tienster's picture

If it is still on (likely), i will be arriving at Glenbrook at 8.22 - the same train you guys are going to catch to Woodford.
I'll be in the carriage near the train guard with the blue light.

See you all tomorrow.

Spiral yellow flower on the Oaks trail

Thanks guys, Jordan - hope you get your brakes fixed up, what a bummer - Jordan got left behind at the car park his front brake piston seemed all jammed up. Tien did a nice little stack on the last section of single trail with a couple of grazes to show for it, but straight back on his bike!

evan's picture

It was a great ride and good to meet a few people.

Hope the knee is alright Tien.

tienster's picture

That was the best track i ever did!

Many thanks to Stuart, Justin and Evan (for pulling my leg straight after the stack)
