Predominantly a road ride with pockets of off road and technical sections

Distance:

11kms

Meeting Point:

Willoughby Park cnr of McClelland St and Warrane Rd

Full Description:

The best place to start this ride is at the main gates of Willoughby Park. From there you head through the park and down a little drop off into the car park at the south end. From there follow Roberts St (left) to the round about and turn right (take the third exit) and head down 4th Ave. Near the bottom of the hill just before the speed bump take a sharp left and head through a little reserve and over a nice little technical rocky section (stick to the left) to Eastern Valley way. Turn right and head up the hill, as it starts to flatten out there is a little no exit (for cars) Lane called Telford turn right onto it and once at the end left back onto 4th Ave.

Turn right onto Edinburgh Rd and keep going until you reach Windsor Rd (careful crossing Edinburgh it's a nightmare) at the end of Windsor stick left and launch off off the rocks at the top onto a nice downhill grass slope hug the right hand tree line as you head down, careful near the bottom as it's a public road. Straight across the road and into another reserve with what looks like an overgrown path (plenty of room) look for the "No dumping Rubbish" sign and you know you have gone the right way. This will take you around the back of a few residential properties (everyone seems to own a dog in this neighbourhood) and will spit you out onto Alpha Rd look for the little wooden bridge over the drain.

Turn left onto Alpha and keep going until just after Sailors Bay Rd take the foot path on the left hand side (errr walk your bike) down about 100 metres after Sailors Bay Rd and to the left is the entrance to Flat Rock gully. This is where the fun begins...

Your greeted with about 8 rock steps then a sharp right a couple more steps then a few nice drop offs about a foot in height each followed by a technical set of rocks and stairs, go through the gate (which is often locked) might have to errr walk your bike on the foot path around the gate and head down the paved road for about 100 metres, swing a nice easy left onto a dirt section that is slightly downhill and runs for about 150 metres. After that it's back on the paved path make certain to take a left at the T and head out of park onto Market St.

Head to the end of Market St and about 20 metres after you turn right onto West St send it left and over the edge, make sure you get plenty of speed as there is a couple rocks to launch off here and the best part about them is you can make them what you want... on the right hand edge they are both about a foot in height and evenly increase in height to the left hand edge where they over a metre (maybe two on the second one) there's also some home-made BMX style jumps right down the bottom here but I always give them a miss keep my momentum and stick the right for the slog back up the hill.

Keep heading in the same direction along West St and at the end is a bike path that sends you through to Hamilton Lane, ride to the top (bit of a slog) turn right onto Hamilton Ave at the end turn left onto Marks St and head up to Brook St (This climb is down right nasty) I usually stop for a drink at the bottom and prepare myself. You need to cross Brook and it's a really busy road so take your time and be careful (you'll need the rest anyhow) once across turn right until you reach Slade St turn left and then take the first right (Adolphus St) take it all the way to the T at the bottom and turn left onto Market St then right onto King St and right again onto Garland Rd. Okay that's the boring bit over... at the end of Garland stick right and head down a technical winding rock stair section and onto a dirt/rock path that kicks you back out into Flat Rock Gully.

There's a few options here and you can mix it up depending on how you feel but I usually turn right onto the paved path and take it easy (catching my breath) and turning right where the path splits, up past the crematorium and to the rugby/soccer pitches. If you have some spare time and there is no one in the way on the field there is three really nice HUGE rolling grass jumps. Some kind person has taken the time to smooth out a nice little launching ramp on the first one, (my favourite) what make this one extra nice is that there is a paved downhill runup into it.

After that it's usually time to go home (and I'm feeling the burn by this stage anyhow) so it's the slog up Willoughby Rd and home.
