Marramarra NP - the brave or the stupid

When:
Sunday, 26 September, 2010 - 09:00

The meeting times are 'ready to ride'. If you need time to prepare equipment then please arrive a few minutes earlier.

Ride Database Entry:
Marramarra National Park
Meeting Point:

Bloodwood Road, Fiddletown heads up to the National Park. There's a sharp right bend by Marramarra Ridge Trail, with Coba Point Fire Trail shortly after (the proceeding sharp left). There's parking by either trail which are less than 1km apart, but the area by Coba Point Fire Trail is the go.

I intend meeting at the Marramarra Ridge junction, though I don't fancy driving down the dirt road, so will park where the sealed road ends and ride the rest of the way.

Show on Google maps: Meeting point. Login or register to get directions.

My plan is to hit the grand loop of the Smugglers descent and enormous climb up from the creek. If we aren't dead from that ordeal, having some action on the Coba Ridge track (which resembles the Great Northern Road) could hit the spot.

There are several detours that can be taken if desired; just must work out which ones to take. This is not a ride for the shy, as it will test your handling skills in many forms, but if they are good, this makes a great ride, and there are many long sweeping tracks to break up these difficult sections.

Call me Captain Slow!

Date:
29 Aug 10

This was part of an extended ride from home to DH + C + P + L and back totalling about 60km to try out a nutrition strategy and eating on the bike.

Seemed to come together OK apart from feeling like gagging after downing the first gel at the start of Long trail, and discovering that otherwise yummy muesli bars taste and feel like cardboard when our mouth is dry and you're trying to keep up your pace!

Lane Cove National Park update for 29 Aug

Status:
Green/Open

Rode various bits of LCNP including Terry's Ck track (to the M2) and Devlins Ck track, plus the main spine and all good. Very few wet patches, a couple of stinky bits where the sewer pipes are obviously leaking. Plenty of bikes and walkers out this morning.

Thanks Brad!

Had an excellent 'Trailbreakers' skills session with Brad Mertens today. Spent the morning focusing on track stands, ratcheting, slow turns and bunny hops. We also spent time looking at bike set-up - I received some great tips on tire pressure, suspension set-up and tire choice.
After lunch, the focus shifted to cornering, technical drops and climbs.

Terrey Hills update for 29 Aug

Status:

Wonderful season of early mists and mellow fruitfulness!
Close bossom-friend of the just-rising sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With blooms the wattles that round MV road run;
To bend with gum nuts the mossed eucalypt trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the chest, and plump the new tyre
With a sweet Hope-hum; to set for budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think cold rainy days will never cease,
For Spring has finally o'erbrimmed their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid this track?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find;
the funnest things are close to home;
Drowsed with the fume of eucalypts, while thy hook
Spares the next track and all its newly twined webs
And sometimes like a river meander the trail,
shaded by the low hanging branches (watch out!)

Where are the songs of Winter now? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music on the Ipod too, -
While barred clouds bloom the soft-starting day
And touch the old man banksia with rosy hue;
Among the salty river sallows below, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown horses loud bleat from Terrey hilly bourn;
Cicadas sing, and now with treble soft
The kite whistles from a mighty loft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies....

In short - the track is open and in great condition
Smiling
