Single Speed - Yeah Baby
Wow and holy crap what a hard race.
My First 100km
Well this was my first 100km race and boy did I pick a hard one to do! I started at the back of the pack as I had no expectations of any heroics. We quickly hit the usual traffic jam as we entered the first single track. This eased up a bit though as we went into the next firetrail section and things started to spread out. Things went pretty much as normal in the first 50km. I was pretty much by myself for most of it. I only saw Loz when he broke down and again at the 30km water stop when he caught up. I saw Rob, Tien and Leo at the water stop too but they left shortly after I got there.
Congrats to all full Angry
Congrats to all full Angry Doctors.
Lozza, great work. All that hill training must have paid off.
Rob, better luck next time.
I did the 50km - too many hills for my liking.
Sounds like the better half of the course is definately in the second 50kms
Time of 3:16 (23rd in my category). A couple of chain suck mals, major back spasms & the dreaded IBT knee.
Top work by all
It was very nice seeing so many nobmobbers out on the trail & having a quick chat. Damien was the first to come past on his single speed, then Deano caught up to me before we traded places off & on all day, next I caught up to Critty who didn't look very well, full credit to him for finishing. At the 50k stop I had a quick chat to Ladytoast before heading off. In the last 50 Deano & I traded position a couple more times until I caught Mick with about 3km to go. Completing a ride like this is so much easier with familiar faces about, well done to all.
Too Much Fun
Well - maybe the first 50Km was?
How hard was that course though? But how much fun too? Think therein lies the problem. Take a look at the MB details (see below) and it's obvious I was having too much fun in the first 50. In fact, I knew this only an hour into the race. As I may have said - not sure how accurate the Edge calorie counter is, but I reckon when it says I'm burning 5-600/hour that's sustainable (although I averaged 830/hour on Dirtworks this year) and when I do 900+ that's just not a good idea. After the first hour yesterday it said 1100 calories and something silly like only just over 10Km. Should have known then to chill out, but thought I was keeping the HR low enough that it didn't matter. Put the high number down to the Edge's slightly dodgy calculation and the amount of altitude that we were doing - oh dear!
