Common 'newbie' queries on buying or upgrading a bike. How do a few local shops fair?

A lot of questions are asked in the forum here relate to buying a new bike for the first time, or (more often I think) upgrading from that first ride.

We'd like to think of the average user here as pretty knowledgeable, and that you'll find plenty of good advice in places like our MTB Gear Forum. That said, we were interested to find out how the pros in some local bike shope would respond to some common queries:

1. I'd like to take up MTB riding and have a limited budget, what's the best 'cheap' bike for me to buy to start?

2. I've been riding some local firetrails on my Huffy hardtail and feel ready to take my riding to the next level, take on some rougher terrain & maybe small drops. Say I have $2,500 to spend, what should I be looking at? Talk me into spending more if you can!

3. My 'significant other' has recently taken up MTB riding. They don't have much gear. In fact they ride in old tees, board shorts and trainers. What's the best gift under $100 you can recommend giving to a relatively new rider?

4. Store's choice (optional): aside from the above, what's the most common type of query you get and what does the customer usually end up buying?

Head on over to Local Bike Shops: Responses to common newbie queries to find out how they went.

Removing RP2 from Reign frame

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all. Could somebody help me with some advice - I want to take my Fox RP2 shock off the frame of my 2008 Giant Reign to replace the DU bushes myself. Just can't find any reputable instructions for Step 1 - removing shock from frame! Is it as straight-forward as unscrewing the mounting bolts? Any school boy errors to be mindful of?

If anyone could direct me to a faithful source or instructional video, that would be an extra plus!

Andersons and Oaks Condition?

Has anyone been on Andersons and or the Oaks this week and have a trail status update? I was thinking of linking the two up Saturday (provided the heavy rain Friday doesn't eventuate) and would like to know if it will be a muddy, grind paste type of ride or a nice leisurely jaunt through the Blue Mountains.

Cheers

From Italy without a bike!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi guys! I'm a new member of this awesome forum. I'm from Italy and from Dec 28th I'm gonna spent my holidays around Sydney. It would be great to find a nice place and nice people to ride with. I'll have no bike with me and need to rent one with helmet, knee guards etc. I use to do all-mountain and free ride here in Sardinia and will be awesome to ride new spots around the most beautiful city in the world! I'm gonna stay in Dee Why from Dec 28 to Jan 5th, and read about Manly Dam or Oxford Falls (that seems to be crazy!).

Old Man's Valley update for 27 Nov

A couple of wet spots but nothing too serious, seems to be a fair bit of scattered glass on parts of trail, particularly uphill blue line and black top section.

I'm sadly selling my first 'real' mountain bike as I've moved onto bigger wheels and this bike (as much as I love it) just doesn't deserve to be sat around not doing much. It's a great bike to ride. This was my first dual suspension bike after riding hardtails and I bought it in the UK before bringing it with me to Sydney in 2008. It is an iconic single pivot design which is still in use today and is built up with a great selection of components.

Details are as follows:
Santa Cruz Superlight Medium frame (Made in USA) - I believe it's a 2006 frame and is 26"
