Well I think the theory was that Greg would lead the second group and cut a path through the air with his smooth cheeks and the rest of 2nd group would draft in his jet stream, thus catching up.
However the wiser men took one for the team and turned back at the start of Long so that group 1 and 2 would not go hungry.
