For what it's worth, the main reason I use Oval carbon post, bars & stem is due to the fact they are Kevlar reinforced to prevent shattering and in addition, the seat post also has a thin alloy layer inside the carbon. They are race light but the peace of mind knowing my post isn't going to tear me a second butt is reassuring.
Actually, having personal experience with the post in question and the bike it went on. The post was badly laminated, and even had sections which were not wetted out let alone stuck to the adjacent layers.
The only thing Pikey possibly did wrong on assembly was orienting the slot in the clamp adjacent to the slot in the seat tube. A theoretical no-no with carbon posts or seat tubes.
Of course riding a lightweight 4" bike off a 5' drop probably contributed somewhat
In this case the seat post clamp wasn't too tight as I had to lube and force the post in place. (using a combo of sorbolene and KY JellY)
Nic is right in that the carbon was poorly constructed (my research found it was made from the same factory that make Ritchie components, (from their reject bin????) I contacted the supplier who offered a full refund but decided to keep the snapped post to add to my shrine of stupidity, which grows by the year I may add.
Nic and Rob were partly right in that I probably shouldn't have done a 3 foot drop on a 11.9kg XC bike BUT I am a very experienced semi amateur rider with over 7 years of mid life crisis MTB riding.
Having said that, if I didn't landed at a 43.8 degree angle using my fat muscular finely tuned thigh as a correctional aid and thus causing a very scary crack/tearing sound, similar to that time I farted and tore a hole in my new double fronted Calvin Kliens that my Milf next-door neighbour bought me last Xmas, I would have ended on my fat hairy butt!. So in that sense it was a sacrificial post, job well done.
hypothesise: Carbon, good for nothing but bottle cages (and freezing Hans Solo)..........
Carbon fail
The carbon in fine. the guy over tightening the clamp, I worry about
+1 Flynny, looks like it caused the failure.

Yeah, check out the thread about How to build a bike using only a computer!... the post was an eBay special. Greg should really know better

Please post photos of "Milf next-door neighbour" for closer analysis.
