New Middle Ring

It's that time again. Massive wear to middle ring after only a year or so - time for a new one.

Don't think it's necessary to explain which is which here!

Have a look at the granny to compare wear levels between each ring. Of course the big ring was hardly touched from a wear point of view - although it was bent and had missing teeth a-plenty due to being used as a bash guard! :">

chain rings. The Kona had Shimano and the Specialized has Truvative and I have found the Truvative wears much, much quicker. Would be interested to hear other peoples thoughts on this one.

They are Truvative, alloy.

The bike came with this and Shimano chain. The second lot did seem to wear much quicker and were paired with Wipperman chain. Not that I think this had anything to do with it - was probably doing a lot more Km by then.

There's you problem there - Truvativ make their rings out of cheese, not alloy.

XT's also seem to be produced by Bovine rather than mechanical means. I'd had an XT crankset for a couple of months and had managed to knock a few teeth flat and start looking a little shark fin already, on big ring and middle. Though of course the granny was unused and pristine...

Replaced the middle ring with a Race Face ring from a crankset that wasn't very well made, another story... and bought a Blackspire 46T big ring and it's been bashed just as much off rocks and concrete and no tooth damage. I shall be asking my orthodontist for Blackspire dentures ;-0
