GPS Holder

Here's a simple GPS holder for a Garmin Edge, although this would probably work with any old GPS/Computer.

Both the mounts that came with the unit broke so while searching for a replacement thought to kill two birds with one stone and make a protective mount. The reasoning behind this was to protect the screen and also keep sand out of the front two buttons (start/stop & lap/reset) which can become jammed with grit (although this can be fixed, see Edge 305 and MTB woes at MB forums).

Anyhow, as you can see, it's pretty simple. The clear plastic is a nice thickness - it is the packaging from some sheets, but sure other products might also use equally useful stuff. It's glued with Evo-stick... erm, sorry... Selleys Kwik Grip, as is the velcro tape that is used to fix to your top tube.

The black stuff is foam like padding to stop it scratching the frame. It's not quiet grippy enough to stop 3. below though Sad

This holder is not ideal because:

  1. When it's cold, the clear plastic either shrinks or is not flexible enough, and the side buttons get held down. OK, not a problem - make one a bit bigger.
  2. It needs to be fixed to a tube. Again, not a problem if you want this on a stem or top tube, but I find the former too exposed and the latter too low. Ideally a mount should hold the unit to the side of the stem.
  3. To stop the unit rotating around whatever you fix it too, the velcro has to be pulled quiet tight. Problem here is that presses the front two buttons down. Doh! OK, so don't fasten it too tight and straighten it up once or twice per ride.

For the moment these short comings aren't that big a deal, but would like to get something better sorted at some point.

Here's another shot of this with the unit inside.
