Nice simplespeed.

Its not that much slower around the Dam compared to the geared suspended bike. I can't make it up the steps but I haven't conquered them yet anyway.

Can you ride up the Dam's heartbreak hill with a SS? Eye-wink

Heart break hill is easy on a SS you just need to harden up.

Andrew look far less complicated than the cake.

A little practice and a lot of momentum and you'll gets up those steps. I have conquered the steps but by the time I get to the top part I have lost all speed. One day I'll do it!

What gearing are your running?

I will check but I think it is 32/16.
Great for the dirt but useless for the road, however I just did the hill from Duck hole's to Center Track and my legs did feel it.
I find for the Dam my fingers get tired before my legs, it is like riding a jack hammer down the hills but god it feels good to keep up or pass the big bikes. (Not that I am racing of course)

Gear Ratio is important I find for me that 32 x 19 with 180mm cranks is a good ratio on my 29er it is suited to most of the riding I do in and around Sydney on the 26inch bike I ran 32 x 17 with 175mm cranks which works out about the same.

In a few weeks you won't even notice the hill between Duck Holes and Centre - actually I have to make a conscious effort to slow down because its very easy to "go into the red" keeping the momentum going.

I haven't tried fully rigid, so you are braver than me - 80mm of travel on a 29er seems perfect

It's a big ring climb so very easy SS or fixed.
