About the mudguard part...
It seemed that all the mudguard users were just as dirty as the non users, except the didn't have a scrappy piece of tube hanging from the front of their fork.

from the fact there is nothing wrong with getting dirty every now and then Paul ... while on track I saw men without mud guards whose faces were totally black - much worse than ours!
Placing of a section of inner tube between the fork legs always gives me a chuckle.
I wonder if anyone ever considered the physics of the wheels rotation and how the mud is dispelled versus the placement, angle and surface area of the inner tube.
It would be more effective if they rode backwards.
This one should be on the front page as well
on the front page of a Aussie MTB mag!!!!!
Bernd
P.S I wouldn't bother patenting that homemade front mudguard - fail
