OK, lets get serious

I don't know if this is possible, so call me mad if you want but... Has anyone done Andos+Oaks and back again?
That would make about 120km of offroad with about 2900m climbing.

I'm up for doing something similar next weekend, perhaps Andos+Oaks with extras. I want to get as close the doctor distance and climb as I can, but at a "base level" pace.

Anyone else keen?

I did this ride fairly often for my Dirtworks training, and was going to do it on Sunday in prep for the Angry Dr but ended up doing The Oaks and St Helena's

The ride I usually do is [Oaks>Ingar>Andos>Oaks>Sniggle] it clocks in around the 108km mark. The first 50km being all up hill. It's an awesome training ride and can't recommend it enough for those of us who ride the big 100km races. I posted my first crack at this back in March. http://nobmob.com/node/8296 it was tough and took 9 hours. Reckon I could easily shave 1.5hrs off that time now. Total elevation is 1900m. Whilst not as technical it is way tougher than Dirtworks.

I don't think I'll be doing it this weekend, instead I'm thinking of 10 laps around the dam to get the 100km up. But I reckon I could be going the weekend after next. I'll post it if I remember

LT would love to do a long ride this weekend but am not going to get a leave pass for the whole day. If you do not get enough takers for the Oaks how about a Northern Beaches explore, we'll do Manly, Cascades, Centre, Duckhole and maybe a bit of Oxford Falls? Depending how we ride could be up to 100km with a bit of technical riding thrown in to keep it interesting.

Another training ride I do is the Northern Beaches Hill Fest. Essentially I try and ride every single hill I can find. Awesome uphill training and some crazy face grinning descents too. http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Dirtworks-T... This was my first crack at it back in February - a lot of time was spent trying to figure out where I was going. But now I've got it committed to the old memory bank. Each time I ride it I find new trails to add on to make it longer and have even found some fun sniggle to avoid Mona Vale Rd. I've currently got it running around the 100km mark. It's possible I might do the Hill Fest again this weekend. It's an awesome ride but not for the feint hearted. Will post it if I do.

Yeah I do the Northern Beaches hill fest quite often, I was just looking for a change really. Agreed that it makes for some great hill training though, I don't mind doing it again, perhaps mix in Towlers bay and some of the trails around there?

It seems we have some interest for a big hill ride this weekend though.. as we get closer to the weekend we should post something up.

You are f***ing NUTS !!!! Eye-wink

Actually... anyone participating in this thread is clearly insane! Eye-wink

I'm only sad that 2 months off the bike has left me out of this little group as am in no shape for it. That said... oooh... there might be scope for joining the nutters on the descent part of their pain-fest. Would you guys be interested in having some join top of Andos?

FWIW, Andos + Oaks is 1851m up and 1151m down so both ways would be 3002. Or it was based on the profile I posted here: http://nobmob.com/node/3471

Not being sure if it was possible I wanted to see if anyone would bite. No one is calling my bluff yet and I'm not going to attempt it solo, but I one for peer pressure and there's still a few days to go before the weekend Smiling

Rob: being closer to 3000m ascent certainly raises the stakes Sticking out tongue

You're probably right Sticking out tongue lol

Oaks>Andos>Oaks is a pretty safe ride. I would consider doing it solo. Just don't go too nuts and tell someone where you're going just in case.

FWIW I know for fact they can get 4WD ambo's down Ando's. I witnessed 2 mtbrs being hauled back up the trail on the back of a Police 4WD followed by an Ambo as I was going down earlier this year.

It would be great training for my next 8hr Enduro at Nowra on the 2nd, where I'm planning to do 120km and about 2000m elevation gain.

I've never ridden Andos or the Oaks, and would also have to ride my SS as it is the only working bike after Sunday's 6hr race. What is your "base level" pace? I know I’ve got no chance keeping up at your race pace.

LadyToast's picture

Hi jdb

It's my E2 zone, or between 135-143 bpm, which is the range I should ride in on endurance races. That said with the number of hills I will spend most of the time over that, but the aim is to average that over the course of the day. I would aim to ride all the hills and not stop that often. Just a good consistent pace.

3000m ascent is scary though, I would really have to be forced into it Smiling

Rob: sure thing!

Hey Dylan,
My Sunday plans were to go to Yarramundi and do a bunch of laps of the track in prep for the 12 hr, but we have some scheduling issues with the rest of my team, and Steve01 is waiting for bits for his bike wheels....
Keep me in the loop of what you have planned, 100km with some serious climbing is 'my kind of ride'!

I'm definitely doing the Hill Fest this Saturday morning. If anyone cares to join me and a few mates. I'll be heading off from Wyatt Ave, Belrose around 8am. I'm not going to post the ride as I'd like to keep it a small group but reckon you guys on this thread would be keen however Eye-wink

PM me if you're going to join me.

See you there

After riding down Andos and the Oaks today, an up and back ride looks very possible. It would make great training for the Angry Doctor, but unlikely I can fit it in before that event Sad

LadyToast's picture

This ride is so much easier now it is graded. I reckon with enough time you could do this pretty easily.
My ride time was 3 hours, so I reckon 7 hours should see easily see both ways archived.

Good ride today chaps Smiling

Hey Dylan,

A friend and I did this ride for Dirtworks training this year.

The Ingar is a little shorter than Andos and pretty boring. It's a public road once you get up the steep part, although I've only ever seen one or two cars. On the plus side the steep uphill on the Ingar is a little smoother than the equivalent on the Andos. Andos has lots of narrow trail and therefore more risky to climb should you meet someone barrelling down round a blind corner.

To go up the Ingar turn right instead of left after crossing the first creek, when heading up from Woodford. It pops out on the Kings Tableand road a few km from the old Hospital.

Good luck keeping to any HR zone <5 going up the Ingar hill.

I'll come along this Saturday 1st August if you like. BOM looks promising at this stage. Can't do Sunday.

Steve.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the tip, I think I'll check that route out next time I'm up there. Sounds like it's about 110km?
I'm on a 2 week break from this Wednesday so won't be able to ride till I get back but I'll post a ride as soon as we try again.

Cheers,
Dylan
