Wheelset

I'm looking for some advice on Wheelsets. I have a Specialized Stump Jumper and have had the bike for around 2 years. I need new wheels and am looking for something that will light enough to do Dirtworks in around 5 hours (assuming I am fit enough) but also be robust enough to handle Red Hill. As the A$ is strong at the moment I thought it would be opportune to get a wheelset online. Any recommendations / advice would be appreciated.

check out CRC (chainreactioncycle.com)
they can build you a wheelset.

for under $500, i have Hope Pro II Hubs with Mavic XM819 rims.

Fantastic combination that many nobmobbers use!

one option is to check out what your manufacturer is doing in their high end range, for example, specialized ...

S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon HT, Roval Control SL
Stumpjumper Expert Carbon, Custom DT Swiss X420SL

i like giant and scott so in competition xc, i would include anthem and spark (respectively) in my research portfolio ... from the little bit of research i have done on this however, i have noticed it is easy for the parts to add up to more than the whole bike ...

Hey Minter
Jos is getting a wheel jig in a few months and is going to start building our wheels up.

Perhaps consider having 2 wheelsets? Something that can take big hits and another that's light and whippy to turn your stumpy into a XC weapon?

Hope hubs and Swiss rims would be where I would start to look. And I like Berrecoboy suggestion too. See what what the manufacturers are building their hi spec rigs with? Finally I'd also look up what the World Cup Big Boys play with. Jo Absalon for XC and Peaty for DH. Finally I'll ask Hamo and see what he would recommend and let you know.

See you at the Fling?
Phil

rarely have the hope pro 2 & XM819 in stock at the same time - frustrating! Currently its the Mavics that are out of stock Sad

For all the big hit stuff I reckon my EX5.1D's and pro 2 hubs are awesome! They take everything I throw at them and I haven't had to touch them, they are still dead true and round. Probably way too heavy for XC, but at a smidge under 2kg for both front and rear, they aren't that heavy.

I'd be looking at a second set of wheels as well. One set for bashing and the other for the longer smoother rides and trails. I've got a second set (well actually a third set as well. hahha) that have harder more durable tyres for trail riding/training and just bumming around, then I have my fun set of wheels (the 5.1s) with good tyres. The third set is for road/street stuff with a set of 2.4 (iirc) holy rollers

I reckon a good hub to look at for XC would be the new Pro3 hub. They look absolutely wicked!!! Meant to be a heap lighter than the pro2, but it's XC only. So you could keep your current wheels for Red Hill etc, then get a good XC set made up.
