Morals....

I just recently ordered a Scott Scale 20 from overseas, because I do not think I could afford a nice carbon full suspension for my 100km/24hour/enduro events... and I thought I would just have to live with a hardtail for those events.

Anyway, the package arrived from Canada (bought from an EBAY store), and I opened it up to find not a Scale 20, but a SPARK 20....... So now I have a full carbon race ready enduro xc machine sitting still in plastic on my floor at home.

What to do? Should I send it back to Canada and play the morally correct customer?

Or should I enjoy my new turn of luck, forget about paying the $400 shipping back to Canada and say "Screw it, thats what they get for packing the wrong bike"?

It is very shiny......

But ultimately they will identify the error (most likely anyway). At that time, I'm not sure where you stand legally given the distance. If it was me, after thinking long and hard, I would contact them, let them know their mistake and ask what they want to do.

You should not incur any costs to fix their error and I reckon by the time they factor in two lots of shipping (getting yours back and sending out the correct one) they may elect to let you keep it and then your conscience is clear and you have the bike anyway.

If not, you've done the right thing and karma won't get you out on the trail Smiling

If we say yes, keep it and screw with them, your conscience will be cleaner???

I think HeezaGeeza suggestion is a fair one, I would contact them and see what they say.

Good luck with the new bike!!

Well - for a start, if you are going to do anything less than the 'right' thing then you shouldn't discuss this on a public forum, but...

I'm a firm believer in doing the right thing, which in this case is probably pointing out the mistake to the retailer and offering to ship it back at their expense (clearly this is their mistake) in exchange for the goods you ordered. Now, you might get lucky and they may really appreciate your honesty, then look at the shipping, handling and other stuffing around involved and just say keep it.

Guess at the end of the day, do whatever you can live with but just remember, some member of staff at the store is probably going to be in hot water over this and... what goes around comes around.

FWIW, I saw a Spark 20, Medium for sale earlier today for $3200.

100% on this one.

Do the right thing and let them know but do not pay one extra cent in postage. That is their mistake and your honesty should not cost you any extra money.

You'll probably find that at the end of the day they will do exactly what he has said and let you keep it, even if you split the difference between the two models with them you've got a good deal and have a clear mind.

think of it this way, if you got the wrong thing by mistake, and it was lesser value, or you got the right thing but it was damaged, would you expect them to do the right thing by you and fix the problem?

Now, what was that ebay sellers address?

a.brasington's picture

Email sent to them, trying to get them on the phone as well because l need a bike ASAP Sad

Asking on a forum because all of my non cycling mates are urging me to keep the bike Laughing out loud but my conscience tells me otherwise

mrsoldfart's picture

is that when you need to send the frame back for a warranty replacement, it is a Scott after all, you'll be absolutely screwed if you send them a Scale and they only have you down as having bought a Spark

a.brasington's picture

lf it comes down to the option of keeping the bike (if they offer of course) or swapping it for the Scale, what would be a better choice of bike for Enduro events? (100km/24hr Adventure races and solo mtb). l do like the simplicity of a hard tail....

I will be interested to hear how this works itself out.

you will always feel better in the long term if you follow your conscience. The upside could be that Scott may forgo all the postage back and forward and offer a deal which is what I'd be angling at.

I also think that if your morals were at all in doubt, we'd not be commenting at all, you would have just kept it which says a lot.

Give me the name, sounds like a decent (yet to be confirmed) seller.

Anyway, tell them they sent the wrong frame, see what they want to do. If they want to send you the Scale then wait for the Scale to get to you before you send the Spark back, of course all shipping cost is afforded by the seller.

They may not like the idea of you having 2 frames for the price of one but at least you have offered to return it to them. They may see this as too much of a hassle, they may tell you to keep the frame, which may be better for all concerned.

Anyway it's the thought that counts.

Is it a small? as i wouldn't mind having it myself.

Tien.

you have more than enough bikes already and I thought you were sold on the Pivot?

Brian's picture

Between Tien and GAZZA they could open a bike shop Smiling

mrsoldfart's picture

Scott Scale 20, only one seller comes up from Canada.

They appear to be a reasonable sized shop with a street address.

Postage back and forth is $860, the difference they have listed between the two bikes is only a grand. Sound them out and offer to pay the difference, its an absolute bargain but make sure you get ammended paperwork.

Good luck

Tien, they even have them in small, you're in luck

Edit: Forget the $140, you'll be up for a second lot of import duties if you swap bikes so you'll need them to reimburse you what you've already paid. It's going to be cheaper for them to let you keep this one Smiling

marhleet's picture

having made the contact with the seller , would be to sell it here to someone who wanted such a beasty, and buy the bike you wanted, again, then the seller has two sales, an honest customer, you have no conscience to bother you and someone else gets a deal! so you have a new friend.

don't let ppl know where you live though or some nut job might steal both

christine's picture

otherwise you would feel guilty every time you rode the thing or was asked about it and that would take the enjoyment out of it... wouldn't it?
I agree with the boys, most likely they will let you keep it - if not they are just plain mean!

Scottboy's picture

If you can take it to a supplier here in OZ land & get what you wanted then your conscience will be gone . I was going to do the same thru Jenson
USA but was worried about the warranty . If they don't get back to you by the weekend put it together & ride it

a.brasington's picture

Rung them up at 3am this morning, talked to some really nice French Canadians.

They gave me the option of keeping the bike, or swapping it.

l actually was quite settled on getting the hardtail, so l asked how fast they can get it to me.... they are sending it out this afternoon and l should have it in four days.

All shipping paid for by them, they are trusting enough to let me have two of their bikes at the same time, and all l have to do is put the stickers they sent me with the bike on the first bx, and give it to the people who delivered the second one.

l am VERY happy. These guys are getting a good dose of positive feedback on their ebay account.

Crisis averted!

mrsoldfart's picture

what are you doing to us?

what about paying the duty on the bike when it gets stuck at customs, or does their paperwork avoid that?

HeezaGeeza's picture

They may not have really made any profit on the sale by the time everything is settled, but you're a happy customer and therefore will recommend them to others, the store is aware of their error and someone may not lose their job over the mistake or worse still get suspected of stealing it and rigging stock numbers or other such malarkey, and your conscience is clear.

Good result all round and an inspiring story for others to do the right thing.

a.brasington's picture

For some reason, I did not pay a cent for customs or Gst for the initial bike, so fingers crossed that it works out again this time.
