HairyButt 50km for me. Both my brothers live in Port, one is good friends with English, who linked the tracks together to form the course. But the bloke who deserves the credit for building these great tracks, especially around Jolly Nose, is Garry, so if you see a 60 year old bloke on a white giant trance with bar ends pass you thats him, and he leaves plenty on young'ins in his wake.

craked's picture

Ha, my 57 year old brother Garry who lives at Lake Cathie is a regular rider around the Jolly nose trails on his white Giant trance with Bar ends,But the guy who cut most of the trails particularly the seven bridges trail is a bloke named Phil, we have found him in the process of trail building a few times when I have been up there riding with Garry. But one thing is for sure ,going for a ride with gaz is hard work ! Smiling

Dicko's picture

So Craig where's your entry - big advantage if you know the trails.

Can you give us a heads up on the trails up there - I was planning on racing the hard tail if relatively smooth and firetraily.

D

craked's picture

yeah Dicko, non technical and smooth plenty of climbing though so a hardtail may be the go (preferably a 29'r)I can't make this event being only one week after back yama . even though I have ridden these trails I would struggle to find my way around out there it is such a large area!

Logan's picture

A 29er to borrow for the weekend as well.

Brian's picture

I'll be taking the 29er HT for sure then.

Floydo's picture

Sorry Garry about the age, still leaves plenty for dead at 57. That answers my question, dually or hard tail. Good trails, should be a fine race.
29er hard tail, better get off my arse and finish it before the back Yamma.

Craked look out for the Banshee Paradox (if finished), or the Banshee Spitfire at the Back Yamma probably pass me a few times as i haven't been riding much lately. So be kind, as the person who comes last has feelings as well.

Brian's picture

With the fun of the Husky now over I'm looking forward to this one. Does anyone know where there is a course profile as there isn't one on the site yet?

http://www.blackheartevents.com.au/port-mac-mtb/...

Brian's picture

The course profile is below. Looks like the second 50 has more climbing then the first 50.

That KOM at the start of the race is going to mean a fast start in Elite with people trying to get away to climb that first and from there on in, plenty of hills to gap people.

Should be very interesting at the start.

Antsonline's picture

Ok - so it turns out that due to Dyl Cooper not racing at BButt, I will be awarded the KOM jersey for the race.

I would go so far as to suggest that it will be a very rapid start. Very rapid indeed. I will do everything in my power to try and do the KOM jersey justice. The gun will go, and some hero will race off, only to blow at about 40km.

What is also for sure though, is that the climb at about 60km is not one to be taken lightly. It will certainly be the defining moment in everyones ride. Whether they are at the front fighting for a podium, or just looking to beat a PB for a 100km, or even just to finish. Hearts will be broken on that climb.
2300m of climbing is a huge amount over 99km.
I am nervous, and I climb pretty well!

I'm on a diet, so is the bike. Its time for light, light, light!

Logan's picture

Glad I have been doing hill repeats for the last 5 weeks on the roadie, hopefully that will stand me in good stead for the race.

As for the KOM, I am gonna try and settle into a decent pace for myself and see what happens really.

ps's picture

The hills down in the victorian races are monsters.

Brian's picture

@logan, that's what you say now but when the gun goes and your mixing it up with the elites your plan will go out the window and you'll be pushing as hard as you can Smiling

obmal's picture

the fling is longer and with more climb no?

tate's picture

Can anyone who has been up there describe the trails? Rough, rocky and sandy like DW, or smoother dirt like the fling?

Dicko's picture

Tate see cracked's description of the trails below

Logan's picture

Yeah we will see, I don't want to blow hard at 40km.

Antsonline's picture

You wont blow at 40km. Its pretty hard to do that. It'll be about 65km that it starts to go wrong!

I am back from this mornings gut wrenching hill reps session and spent some time thinking about a KOM in the first 2km. I have a feeling it will be a bit of a non-event. Sure, its on TV, but there is no individual prize for it, and the overall KOM for the series is nearly wrapped up now (Flemo took 1st at DW and also at Husky) so it might be a case of everyone looking at each other in the full knowledge that there is far worse to come.

@Obmal - I beleive the Fling is both shorter and with less climbing. In other words this race is more climbing condensed into less distance. A nasty combo.

Looking at the profile of Bago Bluff, its pretty much exactly the same as the main climb at the National Marathon Champs this year at Mt Joyce (Brizzy). It was quite something and really tore peoples legs off. That being said, it was three times up it (it was a 3 lap race) so this wont be as bad.

Training tip for this sort of thing - short, high power but (crucially) high cadence, hill reps. Something like 2 or 3mins of steep climb 80-90rpm seated all the way. 5-8 of those once a week. Massive power though - almost maximal. Get those hip flexors firing!

jdb's picture

I've only been able to train lightly 4 weeks out of the last 6, and lost 4kg no matter how much I eat. Doctor still guessing as to what is going on, latest he reckons it is exercise-induced asthma Puzzled

50km is starting to look really attractive

doc's picture

From the Course description web page;

Bottlebutt 100:
* Approx. distance: 99.2km
* Approx. Elevation gain: 2,265m
* KOM: Positioned at 2.04km. (59m elevation gain in 788m at an average incline of 7.4%)
Comparison to other events: Dirtworks Classic NSW (1900m), Angry Doctor (2700m), Highland Fling (2200m)

And in round numbers for course distance, I believe these are 100km, 95kmand 110km respectively.

Thinking of entering this race, but that Bago climb does look tough !

Fatboy's picture

@jdb - Jay, I get exercise induced asthma also. Trick is start slow. I always make sure I can talk comfortably for the first hour of an enduro then smash it from there. If I get my breathing too hard too early then I struggle. Judging by the number of people I usually pass in the second half of these races I think it's a good strategy anyway. As you are a bit more competitive then me then try a lengthy warm up ride before the race so you can smash it earlier.

jdb's picture

Will be taking my trainer to warm up on. Didn't think to pack it a few weeks ago when I did a TT race, got punished in the first 5km.

Dicko's picture

For all those hill climbers - looking at a garmin reading of the Bago Bluff hill around the 60 km mark looks like the following elevation changes:

First 1.84 km of the climb elevation change of around 180m - that make is around a 9.7% hill.
after a very quick descent or around 1.5 km the next hill arrives.

This hill is slightly easier, climbing 174m over 2.3km making it around a 7.4% hill.

Basically climbing 358m over a bit over 4 km with a small breather in between.

This will certainly sort out the climbers in the field.

D

tate's picture

with any luck, those 80kg dudes who pack the punch on the flat will struggle to keep up with my skinny ass.

Antsonline's picture

Great intel - thanks for the hill data.

@Tate - Haha! I'm one of those 80kg dudes, so is Troy. Its all about the horsepower! 80kg is the new skinny!
I'm personally worried about the 54kg lady I know will be chasing hard up that hill!

tate's picture

you're 80kg?!? i would have guessed mid-high 70s and troy high 80s.

either way, at 64kg im much closer to jennys weight than yours. cant see myself keeping up with either of you on the hill though!

Logan's picture

Lol glad your saying 80kgs is the new skinny, I can't lose anymore weight. Hoping I should have a big enough engine for the hill.

Fatboy's picture

Well I was committed to this race but it did require some tight logistics around flying in from Malaysia then basically driving home, swapping cars for the one packed with gear then straight to the event.

All these ugly hills stories however prompted a phone call from me to my brother who lives in Singapore along the lines of "hey bro, haven't seen you & your family for a while. I'm passing through Sing on my way home for a race ". His reply "bugger the race, Stay the weekend there's some good jungle trails I'll take you on here but there are Cobra's, we'll get some golf in and Tetsuya has opened a restaurant over here".

Done!!!

You guys can have your damn nightmarish hills that will most likely see many lying in the fetal position crying for mummy.

tate's picture

2300m of climbing in the bottlebutt, i thought i better get some hills in today, 2300m infact.

Galston 9m20
Berowra 11m10
Bobbo 9m58
Akuna
West Head 45m38
Pittwater
Wakehurst.

The beer tastes good tonight!

Dicko's picture

Tate

Same Brian, Matt and I got out to Oaks, Inga, Ando's, Oaks return today - again about 2300 m climbing. Cant match your miles though - only 103 km for us.

Beer definitely tastes good.

Dicko

Antsonline's picture

haha! Thats the best of 'training willy waving' I have come across.
Thats one hell of a ride dude!

We've got a big one planned for this Sunday on the MTB at Wingello. I wont post a ride up as its gonna be pretty nasty - we'll be hitting the 3Ring Circus course twice through, with a plan to work the singletrack and the hills. Anything flat, open or downhill is taken easy.
Anyone thas keen is welcome, but there wont be any waiting around (which actually is ok at Wingello given its all loops).

tate's picture

I wasnt planning on doing 163km, but I had to make up for my hangover day on saturday. On sunday I saw Gav and V out training as i was going past akuna bay, so i thought i better throw in west head.. just to add some kms!

Might be keen for Sunday. Keep me posted.

Logan's picture

I wasnt doing any training willy waving, only thing I have been doing all weekend is drinking and eating in the Hunter Valley. Back into it tomorrow from a training point of view, hill repeats of Bobbo.

Nice loop Tate, I am out at Coota this weekend on the roadie, gonna be chewing stem quite hard I reckon.

Antsonline's picture

Sorry Logan - I meant Tate - he was willy waving.
And he knows it!

Discodan's picture

but what a wonderful willy-wave it was.

tate's picture

haehehaeh! true true. id like to say it was just sharing one of sydneys best rides with everyone, but a few beers got the better of me! probably should have kept it to the road section of the site!

lucky i dont have a powermeter!

Smiling

Logan's picture

Yeah cause then you would of been pushing 350+ avg watts and xW/kg.

doc's picture

Signed up and I am looking forward to it. Now one last weekend to get some climbing in !

craked's picture

Doc you missed our climbing session at wingello last weekend !

Brian's picture

So Craig, if you've been hill training then why don't I see your name down for this one Eye-wink

doc's picture

Was very tempted to join you @ Wingello last weekend but I could not afford the 4 hours driving. Instead I got the 29er out for its first test ride and hit up the Oaks x 2

Brian's picture

@doc, what are your plans for this weekend. I was thinking the Oaks up and back. I need to play with my saddle position this week and give it a test as its causing a lot of pain. I don't get it with the other bike but this one being a HT is not very forgiving.

doc's picture

@Brian. I'd be happy to do the Oaks again. I have only done the long ride last weekend so will be looking to do another long one....just a question of whether to keep going up to Andersons or do the Oaks repeat

Antsonline's picture

Hey all - getting closer now.
I love hearing these stories of hill reps and training rides. We were at Wingello with @cracked and @PS on Sunday and it looks like everyone was going very well.
I just wanted to remind people that BB is on the saturday, and if your body is used to a long ride on the sunday preceeding a race on a sunday, you ought to think about only having 6 days rest instead of 7.
It sounds small, but it could throw you out of whack.
Personally, long ride on Sat, then some MTB skills and tech on sunday (only about 2hrs) is what I'd suggest.

Dont leave on the training trails - bring it to the startline!

Logan's picture

I am gonna be doing Extra's after my bunch ride, Hornsby pool from 9am.

Looking at Galston, Berowra and then one of the following:

1. Up to Mt White and Back via Bobbo

2. Down to Brooklyn and then back via Bobbo as well.

Sinkes's picture

wish everyone a safe trip up and happy trails.
Was down to ride this event, but must attend my daughters confirmation.
Looking forward to reading all your post blogs...........plus some PB's.
Ben

craked's picture

Trails around jolly nose are pretty wet at the moment will need lot's of sun between now and next week to dry them out, and some areas may remain boggy for weeks. Sad
