Question re Kincumber

Hi All

My son and I are on the Central Coast tomorrow and Friday and I am thinking of having a quick look at Kincumber.

I followed with interest the thread regarding the ride there and have a bit of an idea of where the trails are from the maps etc.

My question is: if you only have say an hour to an hour and a half, which is the best area on the map for a bit of single track joy?

Is it the stuff to the north east? or the trails to west north west of the picnic area at the top of Island View drive?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
John

What sort of riding will you and your son be doing? Something technical?

Technical - find your way up the firetrails (just keep going uphill, you'll find it) towards the radio / power lines tower. The downhill bits start around there. Look for the massive rocks / boulders on the downward escarpment.

Non-technical - just use any of the fire trails. There are heaps of them.

Therefore, you could easily get in one or two downhill runs in 90 minutes if you don't stop much and play around. And the firetrails are the same story. My suggestion would be to print off a Google Map (or something similar) before you go, so you can at least remain properly orientated.

I guess it depends if you like to end smiling or not? I usually want to get the climbing out of the way so park at the bottom, ensuring the last part of the day is always downhill with a grin. For that reason, the spot on Bronzewing Drive is great (it's at the bottom).

That said, you can drive from the South up Island View Drive (to the mud hut?) and park there (we met several people who had that day). This is where the rocks are to play on.

From there head along Yanina Walk about 2-3Ks and you'll be at the tower Liam mentions.

When going down to Bronzewing, don't miss the left fork down the sniggle.

My son has ridden Thredbo so we are up for any single track that is going. Any really technical bits he can walk.

Is the entrance to the downhill off to the left of the firetrail where these massive rocks are?

I will take maps as you suggest.

This all sounds good. I might drop my son at the top and get him to wait for me while I drop off the car and slog back to the top.

Hey Goatman,

As you ride towards the power lines tower (which is on the top of the escarpment), the downhill track will generally be in front of you, a bit to the left. It will be the only way to ride down that escarpment, as it is pretty steep and rocky. The start of the downhill trail (for the first 50-100m or so) is a series of sniggles. It opens up more to a typical downhill trail a bit further down.

Hope you find it and have fun. Laughing out loud

(the fire trail you ride up to the top parallels the downhill trail on the way down. So you should hopefully see what you are going to have an awesome time riding down!)

(not sure if Rob has a picture of that trailhead, to help you out.)

How does some sort of half man / half goat have a son? And one who's already ridden Thredbo????

Are the mythical powers of man-goat being passed down through the family line?
