Travel insurance for overseas competitions

Hi,
I'm entering my first international event, the Vanuatu Adventure Race. I'm having trouble finding a suitable travel insurance and I'm hoping someone here has a suggestion. All of the policies I have looked at (>20 of them!) have specific exclusions for anything resulting from participation in any race other than a foot race. As an adventure race includes mtb (and kayaking etc) these policies won't cover me for any medical treatment, evacuation or income loss if I am hurt during the race.

At the moment I am thinking my only option is to find an insurance that will still cover my luggage and cross my fingers nothing goes wrong during the race. That's an absolute last resort though. I think it's funny that I can go skiing on holiday and ski down a rocky tree-lined slope at 80km/h, but a slow-paced 2 day run/ride isn't covered!

Any suggestions or tips please!

Offer International cover as an optional extra on their policies, so will cover bikes etc.

Have you googled specific adventure insurance companies for example?

@Logan - I think he was talking about personal insurance, not his bike - but I might be wrong.
Getting cover for racing overseas is very tough.

I would suggest you email Tony Scott at MTBA - he is arranging some personal insurance for the Tour de Timor competitors and as such might be able to extend it to your event, or at least share with you details of his policy provider.

If you want his details, PM me. I am also talking to him about the same subject for when I pop overseas to race later in the year.

so I thought, I would post about that anyway as it might be possible to cover the bike for overseas racing and maybe get personal insurance from another provider?

Just had a quick look on the net apparently 1 Cover AU and World Nomads offer cover for adventure/high risk activities, dont know if they will cover racing though.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your tips! I'm most worried about myself rather than my bike. I can find travel insurance that will cover my bike for theft, plus any injuries or illness occuring not while on the race (malaria, caving injury etc). I'm not worried about being covered if I break my bike during the race; After all, its only worth $2k and I'd be in the same situation riding it at home. I'm most worried that I'll have an injury that can't be treated locally (like a head trauma) and need be flown to Aus or NZ on a chartered flight or something. Unfortunately 1 Cover and World Nomads have exclusions for races too. I'll try the MTBA guys for some ideas. Thanks!

I understand that one of the components making up the cost of an MTBA race licence here is personal accident insurance.

Do you require a licence for this race? Maybe it is worth checking with the organisers to see whether that is included.

Hi!
It's not MTBA event so their licensing won't help me in this case. The organisers will provide first aid only and strongly recommend participants get their own insurance. They haven't been able to name any insurers who will offer insurance to cover then event. This could have something to do with why there are only 13 teams entered so far...

Hi - as I said - just contact Tony Scott at MTBA.
If you go onto the MTBA website, there is a link to "Timor Insurance".

I'll make it super easy for you...

MTBA members at Tour de Timor - INSURANCE

Going to Timor?

MTBA is able to arrange insurance for events outside Australian shores for our adventurous members. The cover includes $5,000,000 medical expense cover plus $50,000 death cover. Most importantly the cover will medi-evacuate seriously injured riders back to Australia if needed!

The insurance is only for the race - all other insurance cover needs to be obtained from also purchasing regular travel insurance from your travel agent. Having this cover means being able to contest events at a 100% level rather than always trying to keep yourself safe.

The small print:

  • We need a group - and the larger the group the less per member of the group will usually pay - to begin arranging the cover.
  • Offer to be part of the group expires on August 26th.
  • Participants in the cover must be full members of MTBA.
  • Indicative cost is $200 per person based on the minimum number of group participants being achieved. This is subject to change depending on the number in the buy-in group!

If you are contemplating attending Timor and want the security of medical cover then register your interest by sending an email to MTBA.

Hey slatz,

You will have better luck over at sleepmonsters.com.au... not too many multi-day/expedition length AR racers here (that I know of) Eye-wink

Try QBE or Cycle Cover (I think it's backed by QBE). Whichever package you eventually get (you may need Cyclecover Gold), READ THE FINE PRINT!
AR tends not to be covered completely (even though it's been around for ages!) so some packages may only cover specific legs in the race i.e. cycling/running/snorkelling but not any ropework sections...

Hope you come right and good luck! That race looks good.
Cool

Oh yeah, another good contact is Craig or Louise at Geocentric - http://www.geocentricoutdoors.com.au/contact.htm
They do XPD, Geoquest to name a few...
