Crank Creaks

Guys recently swapped out the chainrings on my 2006 Specialized XC Comp.
All fine except now the whole BB/crank assembly creaks like a bastard.
Never did it before I pulled the cranks off.
Any ideas what I've done/not done...?
What's the correct way to tighten the crank onto the splined BB shaft without special tools.
Cheers

Did you grease the chainring bolts when you put them back in?

BIGnige's picture

No I didn't. But pretty sure the creaking is coming from the cranks. Question remains: what's the correct procedure for putting the crank back on?

Tempest's picture

The correct procedure is to grease your chainring bolts.

Loose chainring bolts sound an awful lot like a creaking bottom bracket. While you have the cranks off, you might as well grease the BB spindle. Tighten it with a proper torque wrench to the manufacturers torque settings.

Hahahaha...sorry about the confusion guys. Couldn't log on to ask the original question then....could.
Anyway thanks for the help I'll strip it out at the weekend and see what gives.
BUT.....with the Shimano cranks on it there's no pinch bolt or retaining bolt of any kind. So what actually holds the crank to the splined shaft.
It doesn't even have a taper on it.
So is it a case of just banging the crank on hard?
Cheers
