Does anyone actually stock gear anymore?

Hey guys, I'm getting increasingly frustrated trying to find bike shops that actually stock a decent range of gear and spares (bloody internet).

At the moment I'm looking to buy some MTB shorts but I don't want to fork out $100+ without at least trying them on first, and to be fair dinkum I would like to be able to compare styles first as well.

Can anyone recommend a bike shop in Sydney that actually stocks a range of styles, brands and sizes of MTB Shorts?

Cheers

Aaron

I've always got my shorts from NBC in Narrabeen. Pretty good range last time I was there.

Do you mean just the CBD or out in the suburbs too?

...but they hardly ever have gear at my end of the size range, so I've just about given up looking there.

For shorts, I've got two pairs of NZO Dobies of varying degrees of antiquity, and both are still going strong. Rides, races, bushwalking, gardening. Have only needed to replace the drawstrings.

I keep forgetting that not everyone is from the NB Smiling

Northern Beaches, City .. but anywhere within reason as long as when I get there I'm going to find a range of gear .. and if they have enough gear to warrant an hour or two of drooling over their stuff then even better!

I like Endura clothing, Anaconda stock it at a good price. Woolys Wheels on Oxford street has a resonable selection to choose from even though they are a Specialized store. Clarence Street Cyclery use to have a good selection of clothing, however, I haven't been there for a while.

Good kit, lasts for ages if the buzz on the web is to be believed, which means it's chepaer in the long run. Their service is reputedly excellent, including swapping sizes if you guess wrong.

I've just reviewed their Ringleader bibknicks and Baked Alaska between-seasons top: both impressed.

Read your review on the top, good stuff. Do you wear a jersey underneath? Looking for something just to cut the windchill on 8 degree mornings. Like you I used to wear a non breathable rain jacket and end up covered in sweat.

A polyester thermal base layer, and in the mornings arm warmers underneath. I wore a hi-vis gillet yesterday but it was too much.

You do still get a bit damp on the torso on the climbs but it's not uncomfortable.

Wear them on the roadie but they just keep everything in place so well that when you're in the saddle for 100kms it felt like they should be the garment of choice and they definitely are. The Ground Effect look awesome and I am tempted but the cost has kept me away thus far. Morning's for me are an cycling specific undershirt with a standard jersey over the top. Any more layers and I get way too hot.

BTW, you must have paid top dollar for the model in your article. I didn't think they'd be úp for shelling out that sort of cash!

+1 for the Endura Humvees. Very comfy and they come in more than black. Noticed they're on sale at Anaconda atm. Around $100.

I've found the waist to be very low cut... not great for the eyes of the guy behind me Sticking out tongue

The elastic on the so-called adjustable waist is way too weak and lacks enough velcro to hold it in place anyway. Not much good if you're not an exact fit for a particular size.

The NZO overshorts i have are everything the Foxs aren't. I'm bummed they got cut up when I had to drop the bike to avoid running over a mate who stacked in front of me a few months ago. Still, four seasons isn't too bad I suppose.

Seems easy to get angry or frustrated that a bike shop is not willing to stock items these days. Ever wondered why though?
Imagine owning a store where people came in, tried on gear for size, then left only to buy online at a reduced price??
Guess that would be frustrating too.
Easy for an online store to have reduced costs too, fewer staff, less rent, possibly no gst, and no fitting of product.
Yep its a hard one as pricing seems to be very attractive online but at what cost...

I'm an internet marketer by trade so you are talking to the converted when it comes to understanding the realities there. Leaving that can of worms to the side.

What I should have said was .. is there a retailer in Sydney that does stock a range of gear from different brands?

My next purchase will be a full face helmet. But I want to go to a store that stocks more than 1 brand otherwise I may as well just order online.

Try TBSM.
Seem to still look after DH/FR riders
Maybe call them first in case they dont...

Thanks will do

This is just a little follow up for 29ninesky and a thanks for the recommendation of TBSM. After much surfing the web I couldn't find anywhere else in Sydney that seemed to stock a good range of entry level DH helmets so after giving them a call I drove from the Northern Beaches to Mortdale to check them out.

It was a very worth while trip. The young bloke that served me was fantastic, he took the time to take me through the various models made sure the fit was good and chatted about MTBing in general. I was more than happy to pay extra for that service and they got another $50 out of me on a few other bits and pieces.

I would certainly recommend TBSM. For those who live elsewhere in Sydney its well worth a short detour if you travel to the Royal National Park etc.

Also from a point above - I've bought a couple of pairs of Endura Humvees and really like them.
