Hi team. I am a relative novice however been riding for a few years. Been doing perimeter, long track, cascades as I live in Belrose. never yet tacked Manly Dam - have no idea why not!!!

Advice please - is the track route easy enbough to "find my own way" or is it best to get led through for the first time by soemone who knows the way? If so is anyone planning to do manly dam in the next few weeks that I can join in?

I live up in Newcastle & when I first went there I started on Wakehurst Parkway-just go clockwise & just study all maps you may know of & there is no harm in asking any other riders you see where to go.

I'll no doubt be out there over the next few weeks, but due to busy period at work can't commit to specific dates and times just yet.

The circuit is reasonably easy to navigate. Just follow somenone else!

There are a number of gotchas that are not visible until you're already committed or are mid-flight over the bars, so I'd suggest stopping and waiting for other people to go through and seeing what lines they take.

Six descents in particular I'd suggest this approach on:

* Rocky roll-off after the nice flowy section of Golf Course singletrack
* Golf-course singletrack technical chute descents x 2
* Rocky ledge drop immediately after boardwalk climb
* 19th Hole rocks middle and bottom roll-downs
* Hydraulics Lab step-downs

If you can't see a rideable line, walk it. And above all, have fun Smiling

Edit: after you right turn off the fire trail climb on the Allambie side into the singletrack approach to 19th Hole, a bit of speed is your friend off the drops going down the boardwalk

If you live in Belrose I would suggest Ride to the wakehurst parkway entrance. Try about 9am on Sat or Sunday. Probably peak hr at that time of day. & follow everyone around.
I'll be doing laps this weekend some with kids, some at pace. At this stage I have no Idea. but most likely on sat at 6AM or 4pm. Sunday probably 7am start from Bangeroo st In North Balgowlah, but it will go all the way through the cascades & to Terry Hills.
Probably a slow lap with kids at around 3pm. but it all depends what the handbrake has in store for me.

Anyone planning on heading out this Sunday? (8th July)

I am sick of not riding and simply need to harden up and get out of bed. 8am starts are pretty hard when its your only day to get any sort of sleep in

Mother nature better play nice though as we have a few days between now and then for the showers that just went through to dry out

I might be up for a few laps around that time but depends on work. Will know more about availability in a few days.

Go easy tiger, dont know about a few laps lol

I would definitely be up for one for sure, but any more will be damned hard. My last lap took me near 48 minutes, i use to regularly do it in 39

I havent ridden much since the 2011 Mont 24 Hour, it was a pretty horrific experience for me unfortunately and it kinda turned me off riding for some time.

My heart and guts are telling me i need to get back out and do something though and i will be moving house soon which will mean a 2 hour drive to get to the Dam Sad I quite enjoy riding there, i just hate riding by myself

But if you do regular laps and dont mind someone tagging along i would be greatful. Its always great to be able to chas someone and give yourself that extra push

Know what you mean. If you don't give the place your full attention, it can bite - and company helps to be more relaxed and comfortable.

I used to do 41s last year but I'd be lucky to get under 50 at the moment, so we'll be well matched!

Hoping to be able to make it for 8 tomorrow, but won't know for sure until tomorrow arvo. My mobile number's in my profile.

Good for 8am. See you at the Hydro Lab

PS On a blue Ellsworth clownbike with a white/silver helmet

Sorry for the late reply but i wont be heading out to the Dam for a ride

Call me a little soft but after the rain we have had lately i prefer to keep off it.

hawkeye's picture

I rode a few short sections like the golf course singletrack which wasn't bad, but it was damp enough to indicate other sections would be muddy and vulnerable such that a full lap was a bad idea so i went to Cascades instead which was good fun

ido09s's picture

I had a feeling that would be the case. At this time of the year it only takes a small amount of rain to turn the place into a bog hole

Pity i didnt go actually as i have always wanted to ride Cascades

See how we go for next weekend. There is a ride organised for 7.30 Saturday which again, if mother nature plays nice this week, i will try and get to.

I might take a look at the Cook Street Track down to the western side of Bantry Bay if you're interested. It's a fire road trail so no issues riding if a bit damp ... except for the climb out ... and cleaning your bike afterwards if it's damp.

Ride is abut 4.5k's. Good descent with some nice water bars.

Make sure you go all the way to the bottom... just for the fun of trying to ride back out. Can't wait until the Bantry bay trail goes in and there's some single trail to ride down!

hawkeye's picture

Haha you first! Sticking out tongue

Yeah, that was the entrance I missed on Sunday, rode right past it.

Is there a track to get down to those buildings on what looks like a dockside structure on the western side from the end of that trail? Walking is OK Eye-wink

There's a walking track around the whole KH peninsula, comes out at Roseville bridge.

Last time I went through the stores were fenced off with the fence line following the trail. Though the fence was in pretty poor condition in places.

In summer it makes a nice walk with a swim at Flat Rock beach thrown in.
