eggbeaters - how do you remove the dust cap?

hi all,
i've got two left side eggbeaters (model 1) with broken cages and a brand new unused right side one.
any chance of getting the cage across? i've tried to remove the black cap from one of the broken pedals but failed. (the plastic just disintegrates)
thanks

That's pretty much what happens. The higher spec current CBs come with aluminium caps which are removable/reusable. The lighter spec units you get an end cap in the service kit.

I've managed to get the end caps out of old model eggbeaters/candys once or twice with careful application of a 5c coin or maybe I made a tool.... can't remember. But on the latest candys I have successfully failed to ever remove an end cap without destruction. Strangely, I never bent a cage on the older units either...

I thought you just went for a couple of rides and those caps fell out themselves? At least that is what happened to mine if my brief foray in CB

I think most people end up using one of these

and then buy Shimano

i think i've been through every MTB pedal out there and still like the eggbeaters the best. can't beat the 4sided entry.
if only i could get them to last.
i've also tried the 2s and 3s. while the 3s don't bend the cages, the bearings eventually seize up damaging the axle beyond repair...
so these days i just buy the cheap 1s and treat them as consumables. which is how i ended up with two broken lefts and a brand new right pedal. anyone want to swap a right for a left?

@ hawkeye, that's good advice, but i just don't want to invest in any brand specific tools that i might not ever use again...

I have numorous spares if you'd like to add them to your collection. I sold my functioning sets, but have about 3 or 4 one-side-functional, one-side-broken if you (or anyone else) wants some bits and pieces. Various models - eggbeaters, mallets, acids... Mostly snapped spindles, all the cages are fine I believe. Can't remember if they are all right side pedals that have snapped. Free to poor-sucka-home if you're in Newcastle, postage if not.

If you know Glenrock, the final straw was when I snapped 2 right-side pedals climbing out from the creek crossing in consecutive rides. I have now gone back to Shimano.

Cheers,
Grant.

... sounds like my wife giving directions.

"OK, next left... WHERE are you GOING?"
"You said 'next left'"
"Oh. I meant the OTHER left."

I'm sure you'll find another use for it. Surely you must have a Crank Bros dropper seat post?

hilarious!
only problem is, since i'm stuck with step 1 i have to stick with the eggbeaters?
so, yes grant, i'll take those spares of your hands. will pm you. thank you.
cheers
