I saw a fat bike with electric motor blasting around LCNP. It makes me to think a new way to commute in future. It can run on a trail or road, more stable than normal mtb with motor. Is it illegal? One thing I so sure is we so close to clash as we came out the corner in opposite direction. Very dangerous for everyone.

I heard on the radio a guy was killed in West Swan last week riding a motorised bike. Hit a power pole apparently (the bike path along West Swan rd split either side of the poles)

Fat bikes didn't take off then, and they won't take off now Smiling

Not to start an electric bike hijack, but I THINK according to AUS law, for it to be considered a bicycle, and subject to bicycle laws (mainly being able to ride it on the road AND footpath etc), the motor must be no more than 250w.
I assume that also means you can legally ride a 250w MTB on the trails.

Depends on the state at the moment, but 250w will become the uniform national standard. Currently some sit at 200w.

Additionally it has to be supplementary power, ie not primary. Primary power has to come from your legs, or it is registrable.

Being a default rule that all motorized vehicles are registrable and need a license to operate, the onus is on the operator under all the various state Acts Interpretation acts to prove they fit the exemption.

So the police don't have to prove anything, if they catch you on public roads or trails they just have to issue the infringement and go to court and say "yeah right" and you're in deep poo.

... which I think is a good thing.
