Bike thief scumbags

I managed to thwart a druggo scumbag this morning trying to manipulate a padlock open on a bike on the bike racks outside Clarence St Cyclery this morning.

Tried to get a photo but failed. He's one of the homeless guys who lines up outside the Public Trustee a few doors down from Atelier de Velo, although his face was new.

The chain was a cheap and light gate fence type with a very light brass padlock, which is probably a lesson. It wouldn't have stopped anyone with the lightest of bolt cutters and is probably what attracted this ratbag.

So the lesson is, even if its a cheap bike, invest in a decent lock and cable/chain.

He wasnt wearing all black with a black hood over his head on top by any chance? Tall dude, lunky, never really upright?

would have been perfectly in order here...maybe we should bring back the public stocks so we could give him and his type a good egging!
come to think of it the stocks would also come in handy for repeat offenders who insist on riding trails in the wrong direction or when they're wet .. muahaha! Eye-wink

@MarcT yes it was. Dark blue-black hoodie jacket, tall, and undernourished skinny. Bent forward, with face parallel to ground like a cockroach. At first I thought it was a ploy to keep his face hidden but he never straightened up.

I got a glimpse of his face but no photo, but he probably didn't know that.

I hobbled back at lunchtime and the bike was still there so maybe he thinks I got his photo.

He was looking pretty hard at my phone as I was holding it vertically when he doubled back talking urgently with one of the other homeless guys asking for "a little something".

No citizens arrest from me today. First day at back at work without the crutches Smiling

I know that Public Trustee will have video of him some time shortly after opening time (8:30) if you need to ID him.

You've had a bike nicked?

I work in Clarence Street and I did see him before trying the exact same thing. Told him to f off and he got quite scared. I may call the cops next time though seeing that he seems to try it again and again.
