On the drops!

I saw a scummer, dressed in a full scumm team outfit (some purple-ish colour) ride down the ramp North side of the bridge this morning... on the drops!

Surely this is an MTB rider in disguise? Eye-wink

Anyone know said individual? Mind you - there were plenty people walking up and they didn't shout out so slightly dangerous manoeuvre.

I can remember Dylan telling me he rides up to the astonishment of the scummers.

Buck's picture

Yeah I've seen some people ride up the ramps. Sure requires the co-operation of the walkers though!

And Rob, don't you ride down on the drops on your scum bike? Eye-wink

leximack's picture

sorry, not living around there and never riding in that area what is so special about this super human effort?

Nah - I ride down using the cross-top levers on the crosser Sticking out tongue

heheh.. I have ridden up that ramp every time on the Yeti, it's straight forward, not tried if on the Trek yet as I don't have granny on that. I usually un-clip for it as getting it wrong would be VERY nasty. The main think go to watch is keeping the front down and keeping the bike in the right place, whilst dodging the guys walking up and down - sometimes it gets tight, I doubt the other riders like me that much Eye-wink

Apparently some hero was in a bit of a state at the bottom a while back after getting the jumps all wring on the way down, made quite a mess of himself.

Am I the only one that treats the bridge crossing as a race track?

Buck's picture

It's quite steep and you have to avoid others pushing their bikes up. That said I have seen one guy just get out of the saddle and power his way up. Definitely no granny ring for that nutter

Chitts's picture

... and when you are riding up, people are more than happy to move out the way as they stare at you like you are a nutter and watch to see if you fall.

I often see scummers riding UP this in the mornings! None spotted in the evenings however.

A MTBer of some repute rode down with her hands on the brake hoods of her roadie, slipped an landed in hospital. She missed a season of MTBing. Riding up is definitely doable. Lots of energy and good old granny gear required.

leximack's picture

thanks guys, looks like fun, dont think i would trust the brakes on my roadie though for that steepness.

I don't think i'll get up in my ss'er but riding down is the highlight of my commute (such is the blandness of scumming)

Been doin it for years,
Up and down on all the bikes.
Going down, doing it in the drops on the road bike gives better control of the brakes and lowers the center of gravity.
Going up on the roadie is a bit more of a challenge. You have to hit the base pretty hard to keep enough momentum to get to the top. I usually bail on the 2nd last 'step' as I'm afraid of busting my chain.
The MTB is a no brainer, usually in the middle ring to keep some speed up.
People get out of the way if you call out and give them a couple of moments.
That said, I'll always give way to someone riding down if I'm going up!

that would be an interesting joust! Up vs down, I wonder who would win...

Down on the drops.... I thought that might get your weight a bit far forward though?? Ask rob about being down on the drops at sparrow Sticking out tongue

Rob's picture

You mean Majura. Yes - down on the drops into a steep left hand bend. Weight too far forward but hoods wouldn't have given the braking power required. Upshot was too much weight on the front wheel and a wash out leading to nasty sideways dismount and this:

Can be a littly hairy even on the MTB going downwards. Carrying some speed makes the steps very intersting.
I have never had a clear run to attempt the up but I surely would.

PIVOT MACH 5's picture

Always on a MTB. might have to give up a go...

lozza6's picture

my interest has been piqued...

I might have to take the old faithful to work one day and see if I can get up...

middle and 2 or 3 I'm assuming is best?

LadyToast's picture

Rode up the steps on the hybrid today, skinny slicks, middle ring and 3rd on back.
If I can do it on that old bone shaker anyone can Smiling

lozza6's picture

Now thats not possible Eye-wink
