What is legal to ride at the Cascades. I note the Quarry Track has a "No Vehicles" sign at the top only, which means no bikes (those 2 guys were booked recently for just this-remember). Does this mean it is illegal to ride down. Is up OK as there is no sign at the bottom?. A bit further along at the track that ends up in Linigen Place there is again a "no vehicles" sign, this time in the direction to stop people who have ridden up the Quarry Track (they're stuffed aren't they as they can ride down again cos of the previous sign)

AFAIK you can ride the quarry in either direction. It's an established firetrail which are fair game in National Parks. A bike is not a vehicle to NPWS (it's SCA that think that!).

Is the other track you're talking about 'Ridge Top Track'? This one:

Again, firertrail and fair game I think.

NPWS monitor this site closely and have not asked for any of these trails to be marked 'illegal' so think you are safe on anything you find here.

You're wrong on the definition of Vehicles under the National Parks Act of 1974. This act has a very broad definition of a vehicle that includes anything that can carry a person , including boats, handgliders and wheelchairs . Fire trails are only OK if there is nothing to the contrary such as "walkers only" or "vehicles only" signs or they are in a Class 2 catchment or a Wilderness area and even these can sometimes be overruled by the plan of management for that park .

You are probably right that the NPWS recognizes and permits biking on both these tracks but it would be nice if they could put up a few bike specific signs in areas like this where the main users are bikes
