The dirty way to get to Melbourne

I'm thinking of riding to Melbourne via the most scenic and dirty way possible avoiding the black stuff wherever I can. Has anyone done this? Does anyone know how possible this is? Can anyone point me in the direction of some good online resources about preparing for big epic trips? All help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Phil

You should read Huw Kingston's City2City:

City2City was a series of seven journeys totalling over 25000km that Huw Kingston completed between Australian capital cities. The idea was to follow the wildest, most remote routes and using only human powered transport - mountain biking, ski touring, walking, sea and river kayaking. A celebration of the outdoor environment in Australia. Huw's paddle into Hobart on 21 May 2004 completed the project.

Paddling around northern Australia!

* The first journey from Melbourne2Sydney (August-October 1997) covered 1500km in 52 days.
* The second journey from Melbourne2Adelaide (October-November 1998) covered 1940km in 45 days.
* The third journey from Brisbane2Darwin (June-October 1999) covered 5800km in 105 days.
* The fourth journey from Sydney2Brisbane (May-July 2000) covered 1850km in 49 days.
* The fifth journey from Perth2Adelaide (March-July 2001) covered 6030km in 111 days.
* The sixth journey from Perth2Darwin (April-July 2003) covered 6300km in 112 days.
* The seventh and final journey from Melbourne2Hobart (March-May 2004) covered 1576km in 69 days.

Sadly this has disappeared from their (Wild Horizons) site but I found the above in Google's cache.

Thanks for the info Rob, I'll get in touch with Huw once he's stopped yelling at his web developer and hosting co.

Melbourne > Sydney 52days!

Eeeek I was thinking maybe a few weeks. Maybe Huw was taking it easy? Might have to rethink my strategy a bit.

EDIT: I found a cached version of Huw's trip here:

Looks like it wasn't solely MTB either, with a bit of Skiing, Kayaking and Bushwalking thrown in for good measure.
