Looks like it's almost SS to me! Eye-wink

It just needs the 18 tooth cog I have sitting in front of me and its finished you can pick it up anytime guys or I can drop it off in the next few days.

Are they Ultegra wheels I spy there? If so, they are V nice!

Supagav's picture

Cheers Damien for the cog. I will come by tonight to pick up hopefully. Delicious, well I wish they were Ultegra wheels. They are only R-500s. And with an 18 tooth rear we get a magic gear to work. Stoked. Smiling

That's a massive gear mate. Head to your nearest velodrome...

I think he said it was 42 x 18 which is a fairly easy gear around town. I run 42 x 17 on the road no problem.

I associated the phrase 'Vanina's old roadie' with a recycled 50 or 53 tooth big ring, spaced inward, then add an 18 tooth rear, stir thoroughly and serve with a large helping of enthusiasm.

how did you get the chain tension right mate?

I bought your singleator and you gave me your half link! Sad

Looks great though!! Should get the quads pumping! Smiling

is it 42? It looks huge. I used to just manage getting around town with 44-16 however now 3 months off the commuter... it will be a fearful prospect of riding into work again! Shocked

Well im still trying to get the chain tension to work at the moment. 42/17 is to loose and 42/18 is to tight. I will try 43/17 once i track down a 43 chainring. Its all about finding the gear that works for that length chainstay. It should be able to be done on almost all bikes if you play around for long enough.
THe only problem is you need to keep a very close eye on the chain stretch to make sure it doesnt get to loose. Bad things happen when the chain comes off as you are hammering the pedals!

something on this interwebby thing that you can state your chainstay length and be given a range of gear combinations that will work to save some of the mucking around of physically changing gear rings. (yes I know, for some that is all a part of the fun)

Anyway, a quick google showed up a few things but I think this will be the most useful. Scroll down the page to the tables.

Hope this is of some help to you, or maybe some of the other single speed nutters out there Eye-wink

Let there be light

So is converting the Viper to SS the next project Stuart? Imagine the weight savings with no cassette, deraileurs, shifters and single chainring Sticking out tongue

lozza6's picture

Yeah I was totally lucky and managed to just get a perfect fit with the help of supergav's half link. Did not need to mess with different chainring sizes...
