You'll have a great laugh. They are as competitive or as social as you want them to be (plus it depends which course you do - if you're a first timer you'll want to do the short or medium course to see if you like the navigation side without worrying about how much further you've got to ride).

Because you're only allowed to ride on tracks, which are (mostly) on the map, if you can read an A to Z and get where you wanted to go by the route you intended, you'll be fine with MTBO. You'll need a map board (or I think Mountain devils lend/hire them out on the day) PLUS something to hold the map on there with (bulldog clips are a fine substitute for more expensive bespoke options). You might also want a pen and, if you are really concerned and can read one, a compass to show you which way north is if you really stuff up the nav.

I did the races for a couple of years until I moved to Canberra this year, but I'm hoping to do next year's series. I love it, and the overnighters (they generally do a couple of weekends per year) are fun.

You'll enjoy it.
