GNR - The Fun Stuff

By Rob - Posted on 01 January 2010

When:
Saturday, 9 January, 2010 - 09:00
Duration:
4 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
If it's raining, I won't be there.
Ride Database Entry:
Great Northern Road
Meeting Point:

Wisemans Ferry - by the East ferry crossing (turn right bottom of the hill). There is a good parking area by the kiosk here.

-33.38142,150.989066 (Park by the Ferry)
Details:

I haven't been to GNR for, like, forever!

Time to get back there and do the fun stuff: Up Devines Hill, over to Clare's Bridge (further if people are game) and back, down Shepherds Gully and trundle round to the start.

Probably look at 40-50km, last 9km will be on the road and there will be a bail out option top of Shepherds Gully (you can walk back down Devines skipping the last 10km or so). The pace will be dependent on who comes but am hoping for something social and some time to play on the various technical challenges along the way. Bring plenty of food and water and at least couple of tubes.

This ride will be on so long as there is one other taker as riding GNR alone is not so smart. Well, at least the way I ride it Eye-wink

Will be leaving from LNS around 7:30 if anyone needs a ride.

Who's in?
Buck, evan, Lach, scottm8, GeordieAndy, unclebullbar, Alysum, Danielvn, JOE, psd (10 riders)

What Happened?

Were you there and have a story to tell?

Havent ever ridden this other than during Dirtworks.

Was just thinking it would be good if someone posted a ride up there.

Hard decision as I will have to change my plans and move my training ride to Sunday.

beroccaboy's picture

if anyone could record it so i can it play back on gps when i get back to sydney that would be great ...

Rob's picture

Here's a prior ride same route as that proposed:

It's 41km as we turned round at 10 Mile Hollow, but as posted, we can carry on as far as people feel like going. The stuff North of Clares Bridge can be very rough (areas of baby-head rocks that are hard to pedal through) but we'll play it by ear on the day.

marhleet's picture

out at the Commission track on the way back if they're stuffed.
mostly downhill (well ...) and saves the torture if the lungs are blown.

Alysum's picture

I've never gone down the rough stuff or Shepherds Gully and I cannot afford any broken arms this summer - would elbow/forearm guards be a worth it in those sections ?
Isn't that where you decorated your elbow last year Rob ?

Tom

Rob's picture

Yup - I did this at Shepherds Gully about 4 months ago:

Rob all stitched up

So you might want to bring some armor Eye-wink

christine's picture

You don't need armor if you ride sensibly - I heard through the grapevine that rob was racing down there when he stacked Smiling
We rode it last week and it was fine - took an almost newbie out there and she was fine too, just watched where she went and took it slow.
Whoever suggested Commission or whatever that trail is called for the 'bail outs' is mean - those 'undulating' hills go on for ever!
Have fun - guessing you are lunching at the pub afterwards?!

MEEE Smiling

Rob's picture

I'm sure you hear a lot of things through the grapevine Blondie. And of course they are all true?

Yes, might have been going a bit quickly, but that's my definition of having fun. I'd suspect though, that the fastest I have ever ridden this trail was when I was on the Rush chasing Cupcake and Steve01 on their freeride bikes. Without incident I might add (or did Steve01 crash? Eye-wink). Now that was fun! Laughing out loud

Point is - any trail can be dangerous, no matter how you ride. Bring armor if it makes you feel more comfortable. I would never try and talk anyone out of using it if that was the case. Think how bad you'd feel if you did and they hurt themselves?

bluray's picture

or imagine taking your armour & leaving it in the car.lol

Rob's picture

Nahhh... as if! Eye-wink

Well, it wasn't there yesterday Eye-wink

Alysum's picture

or taking the armour and leaving it strapped onto the bike frame when you go off...

Tom

christine's picture

picking on Ev!

evan's picture

won't do it again. Smiling

Just leave the armour at home Laughing out loud

Rob's picture

Doh! Sorry guys but I'm out. Am not going to recover from Sunday's injury in time Sad

Have fun you lucky buggers! Sticking out tongue

Logan's picture

Would be keen but would need a lift I think, anyone around LNS able to offer a lift?

psd's picture

In the unlikely event someone has room for two from the LNS I would also be keen if I could get a lift with someone. Happy to help with petrol etc of course.

Alysum's picture

Bummer Rob!
I take it that there are still some of you that know the trails well? Including sections where armour can be taken on/off Laughing out loud

Tom

Lach's picture

I've been up there a few times. Its hard to get lost. As to when to use armour, you could probably leave it off until you get up Devine's Hill, then put it on for the ridge top section. Take it off again when we hit the western commission track, unless you like to leave it on for water bars. Hadn't really thought about it much - I just use thick skin. Smiling

evan's picture

Bugger, was looking forward to hitting the GNR.
Any chance of rider increase ?

Cheers
Evan

Rob's picture

You should look more closely, Ev. I up'd the number to 12 just for you! And did it last night before your last comment!

evan's picture

Thanks Rob Laughing out loud

christine's picture

are you really going?

as for tour barbies, Joe knows his way around very well- Speedy Gonzales I call him...

Brian's picture

I can't see myself recovering in time from this flu I have picked up Sad

psd's picture

Have managed to arrange transport to this - looking forward to meeting you all. Would anyone else be keen to kick off a bit earlier to avoid some of the heat of the day?

Alysum's picture

I'm not opposed to an earlier start but it may be a bit too late to notify everyone...

Tom

psd's picture

Yep you're probably right and it's not like there's been a flood of agreement on it anyways! See you at 9am - looking forward to it.

bluray's picture

i'm out unfortunately, wife's been called in for work, so now i have the kids.

evan's picture

Time dig the mountain bike out and hit the dirt not the road.
Hmmm now where is that bike.... Smiling

evan's picture

way too hot for me. Need to HTFU but you get that.
A few of us bailed early near the Western Commission track.
My hat off to those that went further.

Cheers
Evan

PS: Found a Cateye Speedo so PM me if you lost one.

psd's picture

Was great to meet everyone today. Thanks to Daniel for taking us on the extended tour. Bit hot though - temps hit 40c and after 5L of water still massively dehydrated by the end. Ev you guys were sensible to stop! On another note stoked that you found my speedo I thought that was definitely gone!

Cheers,
Pete

Lach's picture

Also good to meet a lot of new people. Thanks to Daniel, Joe and Pete for the company on the longer version (or at least for waiting for me on a regular basis). We went down Simpson's track and back up (and up) Donny's track, before heading back down over Clare's Bridge, back along the GNR to the top of Devine's Hill, where we sensibly bailed on Shepard's Gully and "walked" the bikes back down Devine's. Saw a solo nutter heading off up Devines Hill as we came down. Even madder than we were. Thanks to Joe for the iced water back at the cars - heaven.

loki's picture

Anyone got a Garmin report from the ride?
Thinking of heading out there tomorrow but never been there before so a course on the Garmin would be good to follow Smiling

Thanks
Jon

Rob's picture

It's easy to find your way at GNR, however it's not recommended for a solo rider. There's lots of technical stuff to catch you out and limited mobile reception if you were to get into trouble. I posted a link in a previous comment:

loki's picture

Thanks Rob!

I thought I'd see one somewhere but I'm sure that wasn't there 5 minutes ago when I was looking for it... Eye-wink

Lach's picture

Have a think about the weather as well - it looks hot again tomorrow (or start early). Pete and I both drained 3 litre water supplies by the time we got back to 10 Mile Hollow and had to rely on the tank water kindly provided by the Buddhists to get back alive along the rest of the route.

lozza6's picture

Thanks guys!

Wow, am I glad I didn't kick on with you maniacs! Buck and I both ran out of water and it was a killer ride from the bottom of Shepard's Gully back to the Ferries...

I am glad however that we got to do the screaming fun of Shepard's Gully as it was so much fun albeit extremely hairy in parts Sticking out tongue

Here's how it panned out for us.

Loz

LadyToast's picture

Wow Loz, your HR was hitting E6 there quite a lot - Sure looks like a fun ride Smiling

Caro's picture

to you guys! Are Australians born with some special heat protection or so? Puzzled
Sooo hot today!!
Well done Smiling

lozza6's picture

Hey, if I go, I go hard Eye-wink

and boy did I need a lie down afterwards.. I was absolutely shattered.. especially after doing the last 10+ kms with no water in 40 degree heat!

Buck's picture

It must have been hard as Loz didn't even have a beer at the pub afterwards! Shocked

It sure was a hard day out. Thanks to Loz for dragging me back along the road back to the ferry!

Alysum's picture

The question is did anyone NOT have a lie down after the ride? Hats off to anyone who didn't... I didn't feel very well for the rest of the weekend Sad great track though and hope to do it again soon !

Tom

lozza6's picture

Here is the same ride on runsaturday

http://www.runsaturday.com/Train/Analyse/Activit...

Way more information, its great! Check out the player and also the embedded google earth app is fantastic!

Rob's picture
Sorry - you do not have access to the details of this activity
If you join RunSaturday and make friends with the athletes here, then they are more likely to share their winning secrets!

Think I can spot their business plan right there!

lozza6's picture

Try again?

I changed some settings options just after I posted that

should work now.

Got heaps of stuff under charts, player, analyse maps etc etc

free to register

lozza6's picture

OK, here we go. connect.garmin cant do this!!

this was my commute home today, have a play!

www.runsaturday.com/Train/Analyse/Activi...20605...

can show speeds, HR, elevation overlayed on map, satellite, topo or my favourite google earth which is everything rolled into one!

ar_junkie's picture

I know it's been a while since I was last at GNR, but man that's some serious development at Wisemans!
Eye-wink

Rob's picture

You can't cut/paste a link from another forum that has been truncated and has '...' in it! Sticking out tongue

I'll tell you what none of these people do that I'd find real useful:

1. When you start/finish at the same spot, or... go past the same spot several times it should auto-calibrate the altitude at this known location (and any on route for that matter) to compensate for atmospheric conditions.
2. On the KML export it should put pins in the map (and I don't mean just a placemark, they should hover 100m or so above the ground on a line) at various places... steepest climb, steepest descent, X highest points (top of hills), x lowest point (bottom of hills), fastest speed, highest HR, etc, etc, etc.

None of that is particularly hard to do, so come on! Sticking out tongue

lozza6's picture

hahah apologies, that link was a bum steer!

here's the link I intended: http://www.runsaturday.com/Train/Analyse/Activit...

Agree with the altitude re-calibration.... my centennial laps got higher and higher! haha

But who does that now? I admit runsat site is slower, but far more comprehensive.. its got far more information than connect.garmin.....

Need to keep playing though, I do prefer the simplicity of connect.garmin, and the calendar display is cool with weekly totals shown too.... Something I believe the runsat people are working on. They seem alot more responsive than the garmin lot whose site has been static for a year or so... lot of grumpy MB people it seems

for now I think i'll keep using both..... GC is good for day to day but analysing a ride is fun in runsat with the google earth view and the HR/Speed/Altitude overlays.... you can do like a cool fly through of the ride you just did.
