I lived in whistler last season and heard of a canadian town with a ski resort that went broke. The town pooled their cash and bought the resort, revamped it and got it running again. They used it to create local jobs and owned it as part of the council. In the end they generated enough tourist income that they didnt have to pay rates because the people living in the town, owned the town. For years the people in whistler have talked about buying the resort and doing the same sort of thing, no ones ever put their money where their mouths are.
