Good afternoon

It is with great pleasure that I inform you of the 2010 NSW Trail Sustainability Forum and Workshop to be held in Hornsby, Sydney on 27th, 28th and 29th April.

Joey Klein, IMBA Trail specialist from the US will be with us once again to share his wealth of knowledge and skills in trail management and development to demonstrate international best practice in trail sustainability. Joey’s experience in Australia and overseas will allow him to make sound recommendations and introduce trail development techniques that will enable local land managers to develop realistic solutions to the trail issues that exist in NSW.

In order to achieve this intention, this Forum and the following Workshop will highlight a number of positive examples from around Australia and the globe, particularly NSW, to help to improve land managers perceptions of mountain bike culture and how to work with mountain bike riders. In addition to this it is important to inform mountain bike riders of the land management considerations that need to be incorporated into any successful trail network. Through this Forum and Workshop, IMBA Australia aims to enhance the capacity of NSW land managers, mountain bike riders and policy makers to work together and provide great opportunities for Australian mountain bike riders without compromising biodiversity values in our unique landscapes.

The Forum and Workshop Outline is as follows:

Day 1 Tuesday April 27th - NSW Mountain Bike Trail Sustainability Forum

The NSW Mountain Bike Trail Sustainability Forum will include presentations from Cycling Organisation Reps and Land Managers in order to provide an up to date overview of legal mountain biking opportunities in NSW and how they operate. As part of this, a facilitated discussion about coordinating efforts to develop a strategic, state wide approach to mountain bike management in NSW. The Forum is suitable for mountain bike advocates, land managers and upper departmental management.

Day 2 Wednesday April 28th – Trail Sustainability Worksop

Leading on from Day 1, Day 2 takes a more detailed look at the IMBA trail management approach and the theory behind sustainable trail development. Essentially this means that Day 2 will “flesh out” some of the concepts from Day 1, allowing a much deeper insight into the specifics for the IMBA trail management and development model. Day 2 is suitable for upper management and local business leaders as well as ground staff and key trail advocates and volunteer coordinators.

Day 3 Thursday April 29th - Trail Sustainability Worksop

Day 2 is more about the “nuts and bolts” of trail construction and maintenance and are therefore targeted at middle management, ground staff and trail volunteers. Day 3 will be focused on practical skill development whereby we plan to conduct training activities on a nearby Reserve.

A more detailed Forum and Workshop Outline has been attached to provide a better understanding of the schedule and topics to be presented.

I am confident that the content presented would assist you and your staff in developing appropriate and effective opportunities for mountain bike riders in NSW.
