Are these events open to non-HMBA members? I'd be to keen to do a few before the new season starts. Probably won't be able to make it this weekend though

Brian's picture

They certainly are. If you are not a mtba member you will need to buy a day licence.

Thanks Brian. I've just been issued a leave pass to ride on Sunday so I may just come along for the fun. I haven't ever done a club race before and my fitness is well down (only been on the bike 3 times since April!). What grade is best for an unfit novice? I don't even know the track that well either as I've only been there once before... this isn’t looking good for me!

Brian's picture

I've only done two club races there and they always get a good turn out. I've been racing C grade but the best way to chose I think is look at the distance each grade will do on the day. To give you an idea, the 1st round C grade was 20km, the second was 26km.

andyfev's picture

C grade sounds more than enough! Are the course track details only released on the day? Does that mean that pre-rego is not a good idea if I'm not sure which grade to ride in (either C or D - do they do a Z grade?!?) I've talked myself into having a crack now keen as mustard! Do you know anyone else up there? Would be good to have a fellow rider to chat too instead of being a Billy no mates!

Brian's picture

I imagine C grade will be in that KM range. I'll be in the white Commodore and my number is on my profile. Parking is in the newer car park to the right of the original one and rego is at the end of the downhill course. I get there at 7:30am, register and normally do one or two laps of the shorter loop as a bit of a warm up.
Cheers
Brian

Thanks Brian, I'll look out for you and say g'day. I'm in a Bronze/Gold Honda CR-V.
Have an awesome race!

Brian's picture

Andy, what time you planning on arriving? Let me know if you're up for a lap prior.

andyfev's picture

I'll aim to meet you for a warm-up lap at 07:30. I'll pre-register for grade C.

Thanks for all the advice looking forward to being on the bike again (though I most probably will regret not being on the bike for ages!).

Antsonline's picture

I'm extraordinarily tempted by this.

I have a flight to Singapore (bloody work!) at 16.00, so it may be too tight.
Brian - What time does the gun go?

I'll try and go fast to get it over and done with!

Brian's picture

Rego opens at 7:30am, closes at 8:30am for a 9am start. A grade goes first, followed by B etc. Plenty of time to race and get back to Sydney for your flight Smiling

ps's picture

You were not that far of craked's "practice" pace when I rode with you at Awaba so you will be fine in C grade. Just remember to relax. Also you will probably enjoy it better if you hang back a bit at the start.

Here's my round 2 wrap up. I'm missing the average temps Eye-wink

andyfev's picture

Thanks heaps for the confidence boost but I'm quite certain Craked was just "toying" with me like a cat to a mouse!

Brian's picture

I've emailed to register. Lets see if the new bike can get me in the top 10 Smiling

Antsonline's picture

This is gonna be tight. I need to leave home at 1.30pm for the flight.

It takes 90mins to drive home from Awaba (at best). Meaning to get home at 1am (time for a shower at least) I need to leave Awaba at 11.30am
Start at 9am - so it should be ok.

Does anyone know if its wet up there still? Whats the trail like? If its filthy wet, I wont ride as I cant face leaving my bike all dirty in the garage for a week festering whilst I am in Sing.......

Brian's picture

I've been trying to find out the condition as well. If there's no updates I might have to do a lap Saturday and post an update.

Steven P's picture

The track should be fairly dry. The report from some who inspected it last Sunday was that it wasn't too bad, and with all the dry weather and wind this week, it should be good. Some of the committee members will be out there on Saturday for a quick clean-up of the track in preparation for Sunday.

It is likely the registration will be in the main carpark - not at the bottom of the down hill track (just look for the club trailer and the marquee). The downhill race is not on this weekend so we don't have the issue of XC riders crossing the path of the DH riders while they are practicing. Therefore, we can use the whole loop for every lap, not just the first lap. When this happens, we usually set up in the main carpark.

The XC co-ordinator will let us know on the day how many laps we will be doing. There is a new section of track after camelback which leads back onto the bottom of the flush which may be included. If it is, then the full lap is about 11.8 km. At that length, my guess is that it will be: for men 4 laps for A, 3 for B, 2 for C (all of the full loop), then 2 for D (shorter loop) and one for E (shortest loop). For women, 3 laps for A, 2 for B (full loop), 2 for C (shorter loop) and 1 for D (shortest loop). (Sorry, I keep forgetting what colour the laps are). But this will be confirmed on the day.

Anyone and everyone is welcome. If you have an MTBA licence, then race fee is $10 for Seniors and $5 for juniors (18 and under). If you don't have an MTBA licence, you can buy a day licence on the day for $20.

See you all there!

Brian's picture

and if in doubt, do another lap Eye-wink

PS. Thank you for the update Smiling

andyfev's picture

I have sent an email to pre-register (I'm guessing that Steven P on this site is the same Steven P on the HMBA website? If so, Steven I have emailed you!)

Brian, best of luck to make it into the top ten... as for me, I'd be pretty happy just to finish especially if it's 2 full laps Eye-wink

Steven P's picture

Andyfev - I got the email but had some trouble replying. Anyway, your in! Brian - same comment to you.

Brian's picture

Thank you.

Antsonline's picture

I'm pulling the pin. I just dont wanna have to rush it and fret about the flight all the way home on the Pac Highway.

Have a good race all - enjoy.

One day I'll get up to Awaba.....

Brian's picture

Have a good flight. If you haven't ridden Awaba we'll need to fix that when you get back Smiling

Brian's picture

Awesome race today. Can't wait to see the results.

Lenny_GTA's picture

Speaking of results......I've just put them up.

How was the race? I was too busy having my butt kicked at football to get along.

Brian's picture

It was a small field of riders but always awesome.
