Great North Road Training Ride - Take 2

Haven't been up there since the infamous Easter Monday GNR Training Ride over Easter (http://nobmob.com/node/20709)

Looking to do around 50 k's at a fairly brisk pace - more of a training ride rather than social. Heading out GNR about 25 km out and back, return via Shepherds Gully descent, then back along the road to the ferry.

Lets keep fingers crossed for some sunshine on this ride ! Smiling

I'm in D ,so long as there is no rain in the days leading up to it.

CROMERBOY's picture

I'm in, need to blow off the cobwebs from no riding, fingers and toes crossed for good weather

philberesford's picture

I'm moving house that weekend. Would love to join you, have fun guys.

craked's picture

It seems all members of our 12 hour team have signed on for this ride ,awesome!

ps's picture

Do you have the riding order sorted for the 12 hour? Can I go last.

craked's picture

haven't even thought about it Paul,we will disscuss it ,and if you want to go last that's fine, I think the big question is who wants to go first!

Brian's picture

It's looking windy and cold for Sunday

Brian's picture

I'm out. I think I'll have an easy weekend and get out locally if I ride.

Tristania's picture

Had to balk out of my own Ando's ride due to adverse conditions in the Mtns. Was glad to see a nice long ride out here scheduled! It's a darn good ride out there!

Fatboy's picture

Sorry guys, was looking forward to catching up tomorrow but I've had my bike over at the FRM importer getting some new parts and just got a message that they found a problem with my swing arm so probably won't get it back today. Looking forward to getting it back with some new brakes that are best part of 200g lighter than XTR and a 1230g wheel set in red to match the red anodized chain rings & brake calipers. Schweeet!

Edit: Back in. Will get bike back tonight but won't have time to get new brakes on. At least I get to ride for first time in a couple of weeks. Finishing antibiotics today for 5th chest infection this year!!!!

Dicko's picture

Ok guys looks like we have seven then for tomorrow.

See you all at the kiosk near the ferry. I am in a blue pulsar XPS842.

craked's picture

hey Wayne, Scott is also coming so that will make it 8 . looking forward to this ride see ya up there ,my bike will be the same as allways ,1800 g wheelset and old school brakes should weigh 14 kg all up,oh well I'll just have to pedal harder Eye-wink

Tristania's picture

Packing my stuff all ready to go. See you guys there.

Brian's picture

How did you go out there?

ps's picture

It was warm and protected enough for a few people to ride in shorts and short sleeved top. We ended up doing about 60k with no injuries so everyone was happy.

hawkeye's picture

Interesting... it was really blowy over our way (although some parts of the ride more than others), and we were congratulating ourselves on not doing the GNR ride because it's reputed to be a lot more exposed.

Fail! Smiling

Fatboy's picture

It was surprisingly mild. I came prepared to wear 6 layers as the weather showed min of 2deg but ended up using 4 and was comfortable. I was a bit ambitious doing a 4hr ride with a chest infection after a couple of weeks off. Turned around a few km before the others & rode back the whole way along Western Commission track. Got home, showered then slept for a few hours. Woke, back to Chemist for another round of antibiotics.

Great day still, it seemed everyone was having fun. Not even a hint of anyone dropping a bike even when a couple of the guys launched off the big drop next to where Logan busted his wrist last time.

Ps's new frame looks the goods so expect him to shave some serious time in upcoming events.

ps's picture

LOL. I didn't think it was that windy although there were a few comments about the wind so it was noticeable in some places. Stayed clear and sunny all day and it did feel like the 20 the Garmin recorded when we stopped to turn around.

Brian's picture

I have found the Garmin doesn't take in wind chill. Mine was showing 17.5 the other day but it was cold enough for me to turn around after starting to head out to west head as it was freezing.

Hop fiend's picture

my Garmin was saying 12 degrees C yesterday when the wind was way colder than that!

Dicko's picture

Yep guys I have to agree - for someone who really feels the cold (me) it was relatively mild.

Got a message on my phone when back in range / and note from Tristania telling us he got back alright - had a small mechanical and had to be back by 1pm so turned around early with Craig. So all good.

Thanks for the company !

It may have been a cool start but that was soon forgotten once at the top of Devines.

Thanks for the great ride !

Tristania's picture

Glad to hear you all made it back all right and you eventually got the message! I kept on hoping I'd catch up to you guys along the northern part but I was a tiny bit behind and never caught up (I thought there were more people behind, so took it at a more leisurely pace, though it was only Craig, who told me to pass you on the message that he was turning around). Judging by the GPS, it looks like you turned around within 1km of where I did. It figures. Then I got a massive stick through my rear wheel, bending the derailleur, which is when I called to say I was turning back, as I had to be back by 1:30 (I got back exactly then). Though I'm so glad I was able to ride at all. It would have been a long 20km back by foot! I went back via Western Commission, and it totalled up as being 60km. So you guys must have skipped Shepherds Gully to make 60km as well? When did you end up getting back?

The bike's spending a couple of nights at the doctor to get my 2-week old derailleur replaced/repaired.

Keen to do a similar ride again - I enjoyed the significantly brisker pace, though I'll sleep well tonight.

Good to hear you enjoyed yourself. I blame Dicko and Scott for the overall brisk pace although along that stretch where we lost you I was enjoying myself so much I was probably to blame.

With the race next year make sure you go on a few training rides up there. There are a few things with line choice, cadence, eating and hydration that you need to learn to be able to enjoy the 100k events. Technically your skills are fine so its just a matter of understanding how to race and what happens to your body at the various stages of the race. Also if you get the chance go riding with the quick guys like Gav, Antsonline, Tate etc as they do all the little things right that make a difference to the overall result.

Antsonline's picture

Haha - I wouldnt ride with him!!! I'd be asking the ladies elite national marathon champ for some tips. I tend to hang out with her a bit! Eye-wink
She taught me everything I know.

Seriously, it sounds like you all had a blast. I was very close to joining you on Sunday. One thing though - I cant tell you enough how much fun Shepherds Gully is to climb. I know - its fun coming down, but it really is excellent going up. Techy, tough, but always interesting. It takes a well planned ride to make it up to the top with putting a foot down.

I'll be up there again very soon, no doubt, so maybe see you soon.

Brian's picture

Here's a good loop for going up Shepherds Gully

Tristania's picture

The overall brisk pace was good for me until that stretch where I held off a little bit because I knew there was someone behind me - turned out he decided to bail as well! I have no problem with you enjoying yourself though - if you don't enjoy it, you shouldn't be out there! Smiling I remember a previous ride I did when I was a km out ahead before I realized the guy I was with had a flattie! The pace was good and it was nice to experience some of the technical stuff further North, just a pity I never caught up to bid farewell after I got a big stick through my rear wheel.

I'm quite keen to see these more elite guys ride to observe their technique, thanks for the suggestion. I have a new road bike which I'm cross training on now, though until I finish school in November, I have very limited time, though during the term, I keep in shape by running, gymming and playing squash. There's a track closer to my house (Marramarra NP) which has a track quite similar to GNR, and I want to take the opportunity to train my technical riding there as well.

Until next time, TW.
