Just a quick question as I am returning form injury and trying to work out if I can do the 3hour race at singleton the week after the racing this weekend at awaba (banzai series for me 20-25km roughly).

How would people who have ridden the singleton track for a 3 hour duration compare it in terms of energy expended compared to laps at awaba/ourimbah etc? I realise it is a pretty vague question as it depends on quite a few things. I ride a 29er and do the big loop at awaba somewhere between 45-50min so i am definately not a whippet also I havent ridden for a couple months so the hills will kill me at awaba.

Singleton is obviously flatter but being a 3hour race riding will be longer then doing a couple laps at awaba so overall is there any rough indication of how the trails may compare?

It all may become a mute point as I am heading out to glenrock this afternoon just to make sure the bike isnt doing anything to silly and may find my fitness is completely gone after a couple of hours in glenrock or my wrist may just not like it but i thought i would put the question out there. In terms of energy used do you feel more knackered doing 3 hours at singleton or two laps of awaba?

doesn't have the elevation that Awaba has and is quite open and flat for the most part. I'd say would be easier if fitness was there.

I have copied and pasted some information from a ride I did at the track on the 19 Jun 11.
Distance: 7.3 km
Elevation: + 109 / - 108 m
Max Grade 9.3 %
Avg. Grade 0.3 %
I hope the information above is help full.
As I am new to mtb riding, my fitness is not up there with the pro's or some of the other riders out there, but I do it around 26-30min.
As this will be my first event since getting my licence, I have never riden over 1hr on my bike, so this is going to be a challenge for myself.
If there is any further information, pls drop us a line.

although it requires plenty of steering skills through some tight trees

You'll never know how you are going to go unless you try it. You shouldn't be at all worried about being able to finish the three hour club race - you will never be more than half a lap from the finish, you can always stop and take a rest or stop when you have had enough.

It is a club race that should be treated as much a social ride as a race - if you want to go hard, you can; if you want to just trundle around for a few hours, you can. The only pressure to go hard should come from yourself.

One of the good things about having club races at "other" locations is the opportunity to ride different tracks. And if you are going to make the effort to drive the extra distance to get there, you might as well stay for a couple of hours.

The bottom line is, you should just do it and enjoy yourself!

Thanks for all the info I suspect i will probably make it a long. Didnt cope to well climbing snakes and ladders on Thursday but everything else felt ok so assuming i dont break myself tomorrow i think i will give it a crack. Just have to learn to pace myself which I am terrible at doing.

Singo is very flat. If you can get up Snakes and ladders you will have no worries out here. You just have to keep pedaling here due to the flatness, there are really only 2 sections of track where you don't need to pedal. It is a tough track to ride fast too as you are constantly accelerating out of corners.
