Good deal for $2500?

cambo's picture

By cambo - Posted on 01 September 2012

So here is the deal.

The Minister for Finance has opened up the purse strings and given me a budget of $2500 max for a bike upgrade (gross not nett).

I am just under 6ft 4in, tip the scales at the 95kg mark and ride mostly Sydney trails (AM/XC) with the odd race thrown in. I currently ride a Giant XTC but the doctor says my back is f'd so I need to invest in a dually to help with cushioning. The best deal I have found so far on a new bike is a Giant Trance X0 2012 for $2800 which is over budget.

Is anyone aware of any deals on new bikes going on at present with similar specs to X0 (full XT) that may suit? Alternatively is anyone looking to offload a trusty steed in good nick that may fit the bill

Trance X 29er is looking tasty.

Mate of mine got a 2012 Trance X0 a few months back (before the 2013 lineup). Paid $2,600 if i remember.

Im sure if you walk into that shop and put $2,600 in cash on the counter and ask if you can take the bike... nobody is going to tell you no.
Should even be able to get it for 2,500, but be aware, in WA at least there are VERY few 2012 Trance's left. My mate got one of the very last X0's, and i know its not salesmanship because It was a mates shop.

As far as bike choices go, Ive got the Trance Advanced, very similar to the X0 but carbon, and its an awesome bike.

Are you sure you want to go from an XTC to a Trance? You wouldn't prefer the shorter travel of an Anthem?

to keep up with me on the rocky downhills and so I can keep up with him on the rocky uphills.
You know my view...get a real bike, get a Canadian brand.

Giants are like iphones........ for sheep. Be a leader not a follower.

Never settle for the tagged price!!! Always negotiate especially if you are paying with cash.

for 2500 you wont get a remedy (brilliant bike, my fav), but you will possibly pick up a 2012 fuel which has 120 front and rear.
far better bike in my opinion, go read some reviews, dont think im alone.
bike force joondalup are good guys for mnt bikes, know and love dirt. not like most bike shops that are roadie driven.

2012 Merida One-Twenty XT-D is a good bike and you can get it cheap at the moment. 120mm travel, XT groupset, fox forks, and the price is around $2500.

Floydo is doing his best to convince me to move to 120mm travel for the tracks we do around Sydney. Now I know the real reason!!! Trance XO in XL are very rare, 2 left in Australia according to LBS both in Perth which need to be freighted and cost passed on to consumer ie me!!

Transition to an Anthem or similar would be easier so I am not ruling out set up. Thanks for all the comments guys

Yeah, I've been looking at the Merida's on bike exchange. Some good deals for sure, only draw back is they come with 9mm QR with no 15mm option

I have a Trek Rumblefish 1 with some upgrades that I'm posting this week for exactly $2500. It's a large (I'm 186cm and weigh 86Kg). It's a 29er and great for all round trail riding. Includes a KSI dropper post, Thomson stem, XT shifters, FD and RD, Easton bar etc. The Trek is 5" travel, 15mm QR front and Maxle rear. New crank and brakes fitted too.

Similar in style and weight to the Trance X29er but better specced for the same money. Can send you some pics if you're interested.

I have a trance x0 in large, brand new frame (ridden once on Saturday), new rear mech, new cables if you interested. I got the frame as a warranty to replace my last one. Looking to offload to get a 29er I'm 6'3 and 90 kg and it's perfect. I actually the same bike in XL and it was too big so I swapped for a large. PM me if you're keen.

With next years models hitting the LBS, i'd be going in and trying to break their arms over helping to get rid of their current 2012 models! Tell them how much you've got & if they won't play the game, walk, go to the next retailer and do the same. Someone will do the deal, leave them your contact details if they change their minds.

Good luck.

Its probably not really what your after given your height but i have a medium Trek Remedy 9 i am looking to move on, i call it the arm chair lol. Asking $1800ono for it. Its X0, its got 36mm forks (20mm front axle) and upgraded wheels and a few other bits. It has a few rub marks and could do with some new gear cables probably but otherwise its a decent bike. I am only selling it as i would like consolidate 2 bikes into one and buy an SB95

hawkeye's picture

Ah, yes. Smiling

I dropped in to see Hugh @ CBD at lunch today on another matter, and he was telling me I need one of them. Eye-wink

uglybob's picture

Just to add in - SB-95 = amazing

hawkeye's picture

It looks like it would be a great bike. Unfortunately, the lack of a practical position for a bottle cage is a deal breaker for me.

Yeti with a lefty, like to see that

Thanks for all your offers guys but XL is for me. Length from hip to knee is the issue. Anybody got any feedback on Cube bikes? A LBS has given me a red hot price on a Sting 120 super hpc pro.

A Giant Trance SL Advanced can be had for $2500 or less this time of year. T800 Carbon, full XT, and Fox fork / shock.... plus a lifetime warranty on the frame.

cambo's picture

If you can find me one of those babies for $2500 in XL I'll buy it tomorrow? Let me know where

HeezaGeeza's picture

It's a large frame and I'm only 2cm shorter than you. I have the seat post at the lowest possible setting so it might resolve your hip to knee ratio and the 29er frame should give you enough room in the cockpit.

At your height, I'd say you'd definitely benefit from a 29er of a 26" bike. Having ridden both for a few years I'm now exclusively a 29er rider. Anyway, let me know if you're interested in trying it out - no obligation or expectation of course.

Cycleworld at Burwood came through with a great package. $2500 for a Trance X 1 Advanced. Pick it up Friday ready to hit the trails on the weekend.

Thanks all for your input and offers of assistance

"Ah, yes.

Put your name down for their test bike like i did Smiling

It was an awesome bike but the conditions werent exactly to my liking as it was a little damp and i didnt have confidence in the tyres on it.

Choosing between the 95 and 66 is going to be a tough decision for me Sad

buy the trance x1 and upgrade the kit to xt, you can sell the slx kit that you take off it and end up under budget

Hey - I have a bike for sale that would fit your bill perfectly.
I have an XL S-Works Stumpjumper 26" for sale.
Its a full carbon frame, with 5" of travel each end. The suspension has the famous 'brain' on it - so its great at all sort of climbing and also descends like a freak.
I have it spec'd with full Sram X0.
The other bits are Shimano XT wheels, Thomson Stem, Answer Carbon bars (710mm wide) and a carbon Specialized seatpost.
I can provide it with either shimano or Crank Bros pedals.

I would only look for $2000 for the whole bike.

I should add that I am a Specialized sponsored athlete, and so will have it fully serviced and sorted. It is almost perfect as it is.

I was going to advertise it on the classifieds this weekend, but just stumbled across this post.
If you are really keen - I'll throw in a pair of Spec MTB shoes too.

Get in touch! Its a mad bargain.

Someone is going to get a great deal with that!
