This is looking like a fast ride I hope I have done enough training for the training ride.

LadyToast's picture

All we need now is Gordo to join up and we are laughing Laughing out loud

Whisperer's picture

I'd like to do join in ....
I promise not to hold you up Eye-wink

One more fast rider to keep us honest has got to be a good thing yep come along you wont hold us up.

Bikeboy's picture

with you guys , this ride looks bloody intimidating !!!!
I hope my lungs are up to the challenge

LadyToast's picture

I've ridden with these guys and thus I'm terrified!

Really looking forward to it though, certainly will be one to remember.

Carlgroover's picture

Despite how this thread sounds, we are easy to get along with and pretty much ride towards the front of a C grade race, not at the front of A grade as this thread might imply. You will enjoy the ride, see you on Sunday.
Cheers John.

To spend the day sitting on my fat curvy butt!

Pikey

PS: Don't believe Carlgroover, he rides 24hr event for FUN! Smiling

Its all just a bit of friendly rivalry and a bit of a gee up honestly there is no pressure other than to enjoy yourself.

Only 32 days to go plenty of time to recover from Sundays 4hr blow up what a disaster gone back to the 32 x 19 (its faster than the 18 Paul).

Paul's picture

Damien by the sounds of it you didn't give the 32:18 a fair trial - blaming it for your Christmas excess. Besides there is nothing wrong with having a selection of rear cogs and swapping them to suit the trail conditions - even reducing the ratio part way through a race as the legs tire.

I know its weird but as I have said before I'm making climbs on 32:18 that I failed using 32:20. It happened again on Sunday when I climbed out of Cascades. I had previously failed 4 times using 32:20 - it does not compute!

Damien's picture

The weekend just reconfirmed what I had already suspected and tested on my previous 26inch SS bike and the winner of the SS category on Sunday ran a 32 x 18 on his 26inch wheels. I have also previously beaten a fitter rider in the 2007 Dirtworks who was running a 32 x 17 against my 32 x 18 both of us where on almost identical 26inch singlespeeds at the time.

I think a bigger gear is fine for shorter or slower paced rides where you will be able to save the legs for the climbs with no problems. But going consistently faster at a race pace over say 100km or in a solo or team 24 hour event is my goal and with a slightly spinner easy gear on an up and down course there is less fatigue in the legs and so the climbs and technical sections can all be made just that little bit quicker and easier and a race is won on the climbs and technical sections not the flats or downhills. Gear wise I have ridden 32 x 18 and 32 x 17 on the 26inch bike up and down the Oaks many times and 32 x 18 was always quicker and 32 x 19 on 29er wheels with a longer crank which is in between those two is quicker again.

You are no doubt getting fitter and stronger due to the SS it will be interesting to see how the 32 x 18 (29er) goes over the 100km's of dirtworks up and down. Gear ratios are a little tricky to work out its always a compromise but for now I will stick to the 32 x 19 (29er) I think personally I may be better suited to spinning a slightly smaller gear ratio.

Christmas pudding is a factor too I am definitely a bit soft right now if I ever get sorted and become a hardman I will look at the hardman gear ratios again. Smiling

Hi Damien, I'd also be keen to do this ride; I like riding at pace Eye-wink

ar_junkie's picture

Just had a change in plans for Sunday and am now able to ride this, so if anyone drops out, please count me in...

Cool

Damien's picture

Hey team toasted what do you guys think if we open this ride up to a few more places I have had a few people contact me who want to join in. I know we need to get together as a team and discuss tactics and logistics maybe we can do that afterwards (I am sure everyone is training enough anyway).

I dont think I like this rider limit option I dont think I will use it again.

Rob's picture

The trouble with the rider limit is that people should be tactful. You posted a nice, small, fast ride. Now the masses want to get in on it which although not catastrophic for you will mean your ride will be bigger and slower.

It's a respect thing. People should think, "Damien wants his ride group small and fast. OK, I'll leave it then - I'd hope other people would do the same for me."

Sigh Sad

Andy Bloot's picture

I think the rider limit is a good thing
As Rob says, it shows you want a small, fast group (which you've got)
Generally it makes people think, 'am I really up for this ride'
If someone contacts you as an extra, you can make the call as to whether you think they will 'fit in' with the ride you want to have
With no limit, you may have 20 riders of varying abilities, one of whom may have a mechanical and need someone to wait or show them the way out
Your training ride would then be disjointed and not what you wanted it to be

Damien's picture

Thanks Rob.

The ride is as posted so no changes if you want to join in keep an eye out for any riders who drop out.

Also if you are not coming please click the Im out button to make way for riders who want to come.

If you absolutely have to ride up here on Sunday post your own separate social ride and we will say hello when we pass you on the trails.

linco's picture

Unfortunately I wont be able to make this ride. That's a real shame, as it looks like it's going to be a cracker. At least it frees up a spot for someone else.

Bikeboy's picture

Thanks for a great ride ....
Sorry i had to pull the pin so early , but the thought of throwing up and slowing the ride down even further didnt appeal . The four k's back to the car were very tough on the old body but ironicaly was fixed by a cappicino at Hazelbrook .
And as i said to you before i bailed , i am still doing the Syd 24 and wont let the side down
Let me know when the team meets again otherwise give me a call and let me know what is required for it ....

Wayne

Damien's picture

No problem Wayne.

Will keep you up to date with the plans.

LadyToast's picture

Had a great day today, one of the best I have had in a long time. The pace was fast, the trails were awesome, good people with brilliant weather to boot, it doesn't get much better than that. That long flowing single section was like a train ride, I don't think I have ridden with so many riders on single at that pace when not in a race... great!

I've put up some pictures of us all standing around, as evidence.... can't wait to do it again.

Wayne, sorry I didn't get a chance to say goodbye, we will let know when the next one comes up.

Still kicking myself at not trying that rock though Smiling

Carlgroover's picture

The sick Lorikeet we saw today on the trail has made it to a WIRES volunteer and has no broken bones, but an illness if caught early (as in this case) can be nursed back to health. The lori is expected to make a full recovery. Smiling

LadyToast's picture

That is amazing John, happy to hear. How on earth did you hear about that? Small world up there eh?

Carlgroover's picture

is the Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service. I picked up the feisty little thing and from it's aggression towards me thought this guys got a shot. We rang WIRES and got the local volunteer who cares for sick wildlife, who would normally collect the bird, but she had had a bit much beer by then so we took the lori to her house. She did the diagnosis on the spot.
John. Smiling

Brian's picture

I hope you know what you have gotten yourself into Eye-wink

Bikeboy's picture

with my eyes open ......if not i will run away and hide behind a tree until it is all better and pretend it never happened

Damien's picture

Just remember to have fun and all will be good.

murray's picture
