Mont 2010
I was volunteered to do the first lap. By the time I got down to the start line the queue was already long. I just jumped on the rear rather than pushing in. I was about 2/3rds of the way back when we got the start gun. The run/jog was fine as there was no room for an all out sprint in my position anyway. It got a little more chaotic when we reached the first of the bikes. People were darting off to the side to find their bikes and bikes were trying to get onto the track. It was certainly an experience!
Off we went and I tried to overtake as many as I could up the firetrail. We then got stuck at the single track entrance for a few minutes. In the single track I didn't call track once. It was futile anyway as there were dozens in the train of bikes. I just waited for the firetrails and powered by. Crossed the line in around 1hr 6min.
My second ride was at night around 7pm. I told myself I needed to pace myself as we were doing double laps through the night but I got carried away......again. Got onto the wheel of a girl who was going around at a very good pace and hung on for 3/4 of the lap. Crossed the line in 1hr 4min.
This was a big mistake in hindsight! Totally out of energy after that effort. The second night lap was painful. Had no energy and got cramps in my quads 5km from transition. Stopped to stretch it out for a few minutes which helped a lot. I also had issues with my lights on the second lap. I had turned the current up to 1A and this was overheating the LED driver which caused it to go into a dim safe mode until it cooled down. This was frustrating as every 10min or so I had to ride with a very dim light for a minute or so. Rolled down slowly to transition in a dismal 1hr 18min. Ooops.......reminder to ride at my own pace next time
Fourth and final lap was in the morning at around 8am. I was feeling good now after a reasonable night's sleep. The temperature was perfect for a ride too. Pushed a little harder as I knew this would be my last lap. Everything went well, no stacks, no moments, no cramps. Crossed the line in around 1hr 1min. Damn just missed out on that hour mark!
Once again the Mont was so much fun. Looking forward to next year!
