Do you trust your Garmin Edge mount?

G;Day all
Bought a Garmin Edge 305 last week ready for the Dirtworks 100 and overall love it to bits.

My only niggling fear is how strong is the mount. Has anyone had experience with it falling off during a fast bumpy section of trail?.

I would like to be able to attach an extra safety strap somewhere, but it doesnt look possible.

Finally, whilst riding the kayak bridge on Sunday, I also wondered if they were waterproof!
Cheers for any comments

The mounts for the 205, 305, 605, 705 are, IMHO, hopeless. There are numerous stories of people loosing their devices. To get round this, I don't use the supplied mount off-road and wrap the whole device in clear plastic and fix that on with Velcro. This has the added advantage of stopping sand getting into the two front buttons on the 2/305 (not an issue with 6/705).

The mount on the new 500 is sooo much better, as are the buttons. No drama there.

Never had a real problem in last 2 years with mine and have done some pretty bumpy stuff. So long as the GPS properly clicks in when you mount it then it is held fast. Can also report that the units are relatively waterproof after I took an involuntary swim with it crosing the bridge on Sunday. It recorded some innacurate elevation data after the swim but quickly sorted itself out and otherwise worked fine.

Agree with Rob on the 500
went otb last night, smashed my ayup light mount
garmin all intact

Thanks alot for confirming my fears Rob. Ill work on the velcro system as suggested.
Many thanks

Nice one Muffo. Yer.. I went for a paddle too. Waded back to the start and did it again cleanly. Didnt have enough gear or speed first time over. Glad to hear the Garmin survivided (mine had been handed to a mate to take across as it was my first attempt and suspected I might end up in the river).
Cheers for reply

Brian has a rather nice velcro/plastic solution... where is he? Eye-wink

Here's my less elegant solution:

I'm here... Struggling to type as my hand is swollen and very sore Sad. I'll take some pics on the weekend and post them.

Is nice and secure I find, no problems what so ever with mine thus far.

Mine (705) goes in the iPod pocket in my Camelbak.

I can't fit it on the stem as I haven't worked out how to get the 6hr Ayup battery AND the Garmin on at the same time. Could probably fit it on the top tube, but it's a long look away from the trail down there, and I'd be worried about it being more vulnerable in a stack. I'm too busy watching the trail to worry about HR while out trail riding. A 100k race might be a different matter - will cross that bridge when I come to it. Aiming to tacke that next year.

It doesn't say water*proof* - it mentions water resistance to some IPX6-blah-de-blah standard, which I haven't looked up yet. So I'd trust it to be rain/mud resistant, but not waterproof. A ziplock bag (or two) would probably be put to work, so that I could cross that particular bridge (at the Dirtworks Laughing out loud) when I came to it!

I have it on the stem of my hardtail, but I rarely go off-road with that - it spends most of its running time with a set of 700c road slicks and Ortlieb panniers on.

Did anyone else have Garmin problems at the Dirtworks that weren't water related? I waded through the river and didn't get my 705 wet yet on the tarmac before the next bunch of hills, my Edge turned off and rebooted itself, ie, wiped all my data, asked for timezones, ANT settings etc. I know of one other person that had this happen. Anyone else? Bermuda triangle? Pretty peeved by the way.

in a road race last year. Half an hour from the finish it turned itself off and rebooted etc. etc. Complete pain in the arse. Have to say though that it has otherwise been very good to me over 2 plus years of pretty constant use both on and off road. I am thinking of investing in one of the new 500s though for the road bike and then keep the 705 exclusively for MTB.

I've had no problems with mine. Always feels nice and secure. It takes a bit of effort for me to remove it too. Nice and snug

I use a 405CX. It crashed 1/3 of the way around DW. Not the first time.

The device is a superb idea, but poorly executed. Too many software issues for my liking.

From reading the 'be careful' posts, I'd always planned to epoxy a little key ring on to the back of my 305 so I can attach a small bit of lanyard. I have one on a helmet cam and it stops me 'checking' that it's still there.

I did have a mount break but that was only the clip breaking off. Spent the next year inserting a micro screw driver to get the GPS off, you get faster at haha. Got a new one off ebay and it works fine.

Still plan to epoxy a little key ring on the back at some stage. I'll hurry up and do it and then post a photo.

I'm so impressed with it.

Yes I did have serious Garmin Issues..... the bloody numbers for speed were not cranking quite high enough!
Despite chewing the stem and smashing the dog....

Lanyard is a good idea...after hearing these stories I'll be upgrading (epoxy) mine, too.

Thought I'd share a reasonably elegant solution I came across on bicycles.net.au at this thread: http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewtopic.php?...

I've been using this system since April this year, after losing my 705 unit off the stem at Yellomundee at the 4-hour (thanks again to whoever handed it in Smiling ), and it's been rock solid. Thanks to BNA member Oxford for sharing the idea.

Nice one.
Ive never had my unit come off (705), but i have managed to break 4 of the little undoing clips.... 3 were my bad... 1 was an inquisitive young fella at the Scott... "what does this button do...snap, oops... im just going to have a look over here now..."

daveh's picture

I have an Edge 800 and the mount seems to be pretty good but with the cost of the unit I don't want to take any chances. I have tried a few different things but will be changing to this before the Fling as it looks much better than anything I have tried so far. Thanks for posting hawkeye.
