Maintainence at Manly Dam = Closure of the downhill section from Nov 10

Just received this from the rangers. Personally I don't mind how the trail currently is. However I do hope they do something that improves the fun rather than what they did on the Allambie section with those inverted water bar things.

To Manly Dam mountain bike users

Notification of upcoming Manly Dam fire trail (mountain bike trail) maintenance work.

Please be advised that from Monday 10 November essential fire trail (mountain bike trail) upgrade works will begin at Manly Dam.

The work will start behind Lutheran Village at Allambie Heights. This section of the fire trail is not part of the mountain bike trail and will not impact on the trail usage.

Once completed work will progress to the main fire trail (mountain bike trail) entering Wakehurst Parkway. Whilst this work is in progress the mountain bike trail will be closed between Wakehurst Parkway and the fire trail turn off to the Lutheran Village at Allambie Heights. This closure in unavoidable, as works involve heavy machinery and safe passage past the work area cannot be provided.

We apologise for any inconvenience and trail closure time will be kept to a minimum. We would appreciate your co-operation in keeping off this section of the trail whilst works are in progress. This work will fix what has been an ongoing issue with the large boggy area mid-way down the hill.

Riders may re-enter the fire trail off Martin Luther Place, Allambie Heights, adjacent to Druids Retirement Village. Please note, there is NO access to the trail through the Lutheran Village itself.

It is expected that this closure will happen within the next 10 days. When the date is finalised we will send out another email alert.

Could you please pass this message on to others not on the email alert.

Thank you for your co-operation in not riding this section of the trail whilst work is in progress.

Regards

Manly Dam Rangers

Hi philberesford,

How did you get this message out of interest? I used to get updates from them about closers and track maintenance but haven't been getting anything recently. I wonder if they updated their email list.

I really hope that all they change is the boggy section and nothing else on the downhill, it's smooth enough as it is. I wonder if anyone has any inside information as to how they aim to fill the hole?

I got this direct from the ranger's list and MWMTB.

FWIW, think things will be OK - they are probably just going to put some rocks/water bar action on that bog hole. Well - one can but hope!

You mean a jump? Cool!!

Hey Ladytoast
I got it from subscribing to: mtbike [at] warringah.nsw.gov.au drop them an email and ask to be put on the list.

I used to get updates all the time but this is the first one I've had for a while.

Phil

PS Now a jump - now you're talking!

PPS The mods removed my 'fun police' reference? lol Sticking out tongue

Anyone got any idea of what the revised circuit will look like? Assuming you go up along the parkway and cut-in further up?

Of course one can always take the less-travelled route onto the other side of the Parkway.

yes, you can then take the fire road up by the pipeline and come out at Allambie Road. If you turn right, and then right again just after the lights, it takes you past the Lutheran Homes to the entrance they talk about via the gate at the end of Martin Luther Place.

You then have a couple of options. After the initial flat sweep to the right (150m or so),left takes you through a couple of techy sections that end up at Allambie Oval. Right takes you down a steepish fire road with waterbars and a dry creek crossing that eventually joins up with hte main trail.

This seems to be the part they're working on first. Will be interesting to see the result. Last time the inital steep section down the fire road was covered in scree and was somewhat nasty for a month or so until the loose rock was cleared away by use or weather.

Any idea how long these modifications are likely to take?

I am not keen to ride the dam until it is finished.

I will probably have to ride somewhere else, any takers for Red Hill this saturday?

I just got back from riding the Dam.
Its open, not a worker in sight apart from some tree loppers near the Manly Vale School.
Even the web site declares that “The Manly Dam mountainbiking trail is currently open”
I think some one might be pulling our legs. Or it has been delayed.

They are starting elsewhere first and then moving on to the bits we use so might be a week or a few before it effects the main circuit.

Damn, beaten to it

Remember they did say:

The work will start behind Lutheran Village at Allambie Heights. This section of the fire trail is not part of the mountain bike trail and will not impact on the trail usage.

Once completed work will progress to the main fire trail (mountain bike trail) entering Wakehurst Parkway.

So I'm guesing it'll be a while before they close the DH section.
